Boston MassachusettsThe Basics

Fenway Community Health Center was founded in 1971 by a team of medical students interested in serving the diverse Boston neighborhood of Fenway, Massachusetts. Today it has grown to offer health care services to the broader population in three clinics located throughout Boston. Fenway’s main facility offers outpatient substance abuse services, dual diagnosis support and psychiatric medication management for those in need. The substance abuse program is for adults over the age of 18 and includes an acupuncture detoxification and group therapy sessions.

Treatment and Staff

Substance abuse treatment at Fenway begins with an initial intake assessment. After that, counselors provide clients with individualized treatment plans tailored to their needs. The counselor can also provide referrals to inpatient treatment programs when necessary.

The acupuncture detox program is offered on a walk-in basis to small groups of about five people at a time. Walk-ins are available Mondays through Fridays from 8 to 10 am and 4:30 to 6:30 pm, and on Saturdays from 9 to 11 am. During the sessions, all clients are gathered in one room where they are given hot tea to relax. The acupuncturist then proceeds with the ritual of placing needles on the client’s body. Typically sessions last for about 30 minutes to an hour.

Group sessions are offered in educational and peer support varieties. These take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at various times for an hour and 15 minutes each session. The Tuesday group meets at 3 pm, the Wednesday group meets at 5:30 pm and the Thursday and Friday groups meet a little earlier. The Thursday group begins at noon and the Friday group meets at 10:15 am. Group topics cover relapse prevention, HIV risk education, addiction as disease and coping skills. Groups are typically co-ed and consist of about 10 to 15 people per session. There is only one gender specific group, which is the Friday morning women’s growth and recovery group. During the meeting, women sit in a circle and openly share their experiences. There are also times where the counselor lectures on recovery and asks for participation at the end of the meeting.

Staff members consist of LADCs, psychiatrists, a psychotherapist and a certified acupuncturist. All counselors use evidence-based techniques like CBT and DBT during group sessions.

Extras

Fenway offers teens behavioral health services out of their Sidney Borum, Jr. Health Center. Though they do not provide a specific substance abuse program, teens can meet individually with a psychotherapist who specializes in addiction.

Referrals to HIV testing are also made upon request and when needed through the active AIDS Action Committee at Fenway.

In Summary

At Fenway Community Health Center residents living in Boston, Massachusetts can receive a variety of health care services.  The substance abuse program offered out of their behavioral health unit is much more restricted. It’s a great option for adults in early recovery looking to detox from alcohol and or drugs through acupuncture and group sessions.
