HOW House is a transitional living facility for men in Whittier, California. HOW House is contracted with realignment AB 109 and caters primarily to criminal justice clients, the home also offers three self-pay beds. Their mission is to help their clients find gainful employment during their stay and assist them in a smooth transition back into society. Their program encourages men to establish a clean and sober lifestyle based on the 12 steps.

Accommodations and Amenities

A total capacity of 18 adult males are housed in two dorm-style common areas. Accommodations include twin beds with headboards, shared nightstands, night lamps, hanging artwork, shelves stocked with books and large windows providing ample light.

The house is stocked with groceries, which are purchased by a case manager. Residents take turns cooking meals in a fully equipped kitchen. Amenities include cleaning supplies, fresh linen, laundry facilities, Cable TV, a house computer, printer and a free home phone with a limited calling area. HOW House also has an onsite house manager who has five years of recovery.

Rules and Regulations

The average length of stay at HOW House is typically between three and six months, depending on each man’s particular situation. Clients are expected to obtain full-time jobs or pursue an academic or vocational program. If unable to do so, they must perform 30 hours of weekly community service. Unless a client is employed, there is a 6 pm curfew seven nights a week.

Other weekly requirements include attending five 12-step meetings, participating in house meetings and performing chores. At HOW House, there are required monthly education classes that teach clients about recovery and addiction. Residents participate in individual therapy with staff and counselor interns. Referrals are also provided for other recovery services, including outpatient care.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. HOW House practices a zero tolerance policy, and those found under the influence are immediately dismissed from the premises. Other causes for eviction include violence, theft and persistent non-compliance with house rules. For AB 109 clients, the cost is free, while the out of pocket 30-day cost is $600. Staff includes two CADCs and an onsite house manager.

Extras

Referrals can be provided for clients who need professional help with mental and physical health issues. If given proper notice, a staff member will attend court with a client to offer support.

This small sober living facility is determined to shine a light and give hope to financially challenged men, as well as criminal justice clients who are willing to work a 12-step program of recovery to build a clean and sober lifestyle.
