Houston CommunityThe Basics

With two spacious homes located in the Sharpstown Country Estate Clubs neighborhood, Houston Discovery Community offers sober living for men and women aged 18 and over. The two gender-specific houses are just a block apart from each other, creating a sober community among the residents. A golf course, shopping mall and public transportation are all a short walking distance away conveniently linking clients to suburban Houston.

Accommodations and Amenities

HDC’s home for men is a two story house located on a pleasant corner lot with six double-occupancy bedrooms, and three bathrooms. The house is 3500 square feet with a living room, newly remodeled kitchen with stainless steel appliances, a dining area, separate laundry room and a three car garage. There is also a work out room and a game room with a pool table. The backyard has a pool, built in grill and is furnished with plenty of patio furniture for sober barbecues.

The women’s house is just a few doors away and also has six shared bedrooms and three bathrooms. As with the men’s house, there is a pool and a remodeled kitchen with stainless steel appliances. Both homes are comfortably furnished with central air and heat, a fireplace, laundry facilities, cable TV and internet service. Food is also provided along with an unlimited supply of coffee. Clients sleep in double beds and have shared dressers and closets.

Rules and Regulations

All residents are drug tested weekly and must attend daily 12-step meetings and house slips must be signed by a secretary. Curfew is at 10:30 pm Sunday through Thursday and 12:30 am Friday and Saturday. Clients are required to attend a weekly house meeting where household chores are assigned. Every evening at 10 pm residents attend a wrap up meeting where they discuss any issues, concerns and schedules for the following day.

Clients who have cars are encouraged to provide transportation for their housemates. By week three, residents must have full time work, be enrolled in school or be working for an approved charitable organization. After 30 days, clients must have a sponsor and a sober community.

There is an eight week commitment and refunds are not be granted for those leaving early. Residents in their first two weeks are on the buddy system and must be accompanied by a senior house member to all outside activities. Visiting is also permitted after two weeks from 10 am until 9 pm in the common areas only. Substance abuse, violence and stealing are grounds for immediate dismissal. Smoking is only permitted outside in designated areas. Both houses have Sunday barbecues in the summer, where clients are permitted to invite a limited number of approved visitors.

In Summary

Overall, Houston Discovery Community is a bargain for what’s offered. Both houses are in a safe residential neighborhood and provide ample space—often a rarity in sober livings—for clients. To top it off, HDC provides food as well. For those seeking a post-treatment gender-specific home and a supportive sober community in the Houston area, HDC is an affordable option to build a new life with all the comforts of home.
