The Basics
Health Services Center (HSC) is a non-profit, community-based organization that provides mental health and substance abuse care in the northeastern Alabama towns of Gadsden and Anniston. The center was opened in 1990 by Dr. Barbara Hanna and was originally called The AIDS Services Center. In 2002, the clinic changed its name to reflect its mission to expand its programs beyond services for HIV/AIDS. Thus, Health Services Center Incorporated was born. There are two outpatient programs available at HSC: The Behavioral Day Treatment Program and the Corrections and Offender Program (CORE). Both programs are offered for free to individuals struggling with addiction issues.
Treatment and Staff
HSC is a general treatment program for anyone in need. The first step to admittance is an assessment followed by the development of an individualized treatment plan. Once admitted, clients commit to a 20 week program that meets 4 days a week in Gadsden for group Monday through Thursday, from 9 am to 12 pm. Individual therapy is required once a week at the clients convenience, and is available as often as each client desires. HSC incorporates 12-step meetings into the program as individual therapists see fit.
The Corrections and Offender Re-Entry (CORE) Program is an outpatient substance abuse treatment program for adults ages 19 and up who are re-entering the community from the Criminal Justice System. CORE meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 am to noon or from 1:30 to 4:30 pm at the Anniston location. The program also uses individual therapy and 12-step meetings per individual therapists recommendation.
There are roughly 55 staff members at HSC led by a medical director—including a physician, LPNs, psychiatrists and LCDC therapists.
Extras
HSC offers community based programs to give extra assistance to those in need. For example, Project Vortex was funded October of 2010—a program which provides prevention services to communities of color with a focus on young adult females (19-24 years). They also offer monthly education classes for family members of those struggling with addiction.
In Summary
Health Services Center has an open door policy to anyone in need. The care offered at Health Services Center understands that recovery is a life long process and treats its clients accordingly. HSC’s specific program for individuals with a criminal history and HIV positive addicts makes this program ideal for an often under-served group of addicts in need of a stable, structured recovery program.
