The Basics
Hispanic Counseling Center offers court-mandated substance abuse evaluations, Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), outpatient care, substance abuse awareness classes and an aftercare and relapse prevention program in two locations in Houston. HCC started offering its services in 1997 to residents of Harris, Fort Bend and Montgomery counties. All courses are offered in Spanish and English, with classes available during the day, in the evening and on weekends.
Treatment and Staff
Before treatment, clients must go through a substance abuse evaluation that lasts 45 minutes to an hour and is done in-person at either facility. The interviewing counselor makes a program referral based on the interview and the applicant’s history of abuse and treatment. These evaluations can also be done at the request of an employer.
IOP runs 45 days and consists of four hour-long group counseling sessions a week, as well as three hour-long individual counseling sessions. IOP is for those who have completed a residential program and have been court-ordered to attend further treatment. The program’s main focus is on relapse prevention through effective strategies and coping skills.
The outpatient program lasts 90 days and consists of two two-hour group counseling sessions per week and three one-hour individual counseling sessions. It is designed as a step down from IOP and covers largely the same subject matter as the IOP.
HCC also offers alcohol and drug awareness programs to court-mandated clients, employers or any individuals seeking to learn about substance abuse. Participants meet twice a week in one-hour group sessions for six weeks.
HCC’s aftercare and relapse prevention program focuses on maintaining long-term sobriety. All meetings are groups, with participants attending once a week for two hours over the course of 15 weeks. None of HCC’s programs are 12-step affiliated, nor do they offer detox.
The staff at HCC are all bilingual, among them licensed chemical dependency counselors, licensed MFTs and LPCs. Classes generally include only 10 clients at a time.
Extras
All services are offered in Spanish or in English. Other courses offered include DWI education, domestic violence counseling, anger management, parenting classes and anti-theft/shoplifting groups. All HCC programs are state-regulated and follow the DIVERT program.
In Summary
The Hispanic Counseling Center offers court-mandated evaluations and courses that fulfill state requirements. They are conveniently located near freeways and bus lines and courses can be taken in either English or Spanish.
