The Basics
Established in 2006 in Wilmington, North Carolina, Christian Recovery Houses is a nonprofit, Christian sober living group of halfway houses. CRH operates two men’s homes and one women’s home that provide 12-step based, “Christ-centered” support. All three homes are within walking of distance of city bus stops, and only about 10 minutes from Wrightsville Beach and downtown Wilmington.
Accommodations and Amenities
CRH houses clients two to a room, with never more than 20 residents per house. Each client gets his or her own dresser and half a closet for their clothes. Internet is not provided to prevent easy access to pornography, though clients may make use of nearby Internet cafés.
Each house provides two living areas, both equipped with TVs (as are all the bedrooms). Laundry facilities can be found on-site. To regulate the demand for the machines, each resident gets assigned a personal laundry day, with all detergent provided by CRH. The houses have full kitchens as well as backyards for relaxation and recreation purposes. Clients are responsible for preparing their own meals, though a pantry is available at each location and its contents (such as dry foods and canned goods) are provided for free. Residents may need to buy additional groceries depending on what they choose to eat. For those in need of financial assistance, clients can take a proof of residency at CRH to get food stamps.
Rules and Regulations
Upon arriving at CRH, clients must pay a processing fee and a security deposit along with the first week’s rent (pro-rated according to when a resident moves in). Curfew is at 7 pm for the first three days, extending to 10 pm for the rest of the stay. Clients are expected to do their own chores including basic house cleaning. All must also meet with the house manager within two days of arrival to review and sign the house rules and discuss goals and expectations. Residents are expected to either be employed or quickly get a job upon intake.
CRH residents attend a minimum of one church service per week, most often at the Port City Church. Clients take part in Celebrate Recovery, a Christian-oriented approach to the 12 steps, though they can also attend on-site AA/NA meetings. There is also a weekly Bible study and clients are required to do a daily evaluation and moment of prayer with another house member before bedtime.
Mandatory weekly house meetings take place on-site after 6:30 pm, during which residents discuss house matters and report on their observance of the program’s rules. A live-in house manager and assistant house manager take care of each house and are on-site around the clock.
In Summary
With almost 10 years of experience, Christian Recovery Houses is a well-established organization. This is not a sober living program for those not of the 12-step mindset, nor for non-Christians. However, for those who do follow the Christian faith and are dealing with substance abuse issues, CRH is somewhere they can maintain their sobriety at an affordable cost.
