The Basics
In 1996, Craig and Louise Humphrey, a Louisville, Kentucky couple, were inspired to create an aftercare program to serve the Louisville community after one of their family members needed treatment. With donations and other funds, they built the Beacon House in downtown Louisville that today operates as a sober living facility for men.
Accommodations and Amenities
Before beginning residency at Beacon House, clients must be clean and sober for a minimum of three to five days and attend an in-person interview at the house that lasts 45 minutes. Beacon House, a two-story brick structure, can host 45 men at a time in a dormitory-style setting. Rooms are triple-occupancy with a private bathroom for each room. There are laundry facilities, lounges, an exercise room and meeting rooms.
Residents are responsible for their own groceries and meals. The kitchen has been completely remodeled with all new appliances and a walk-in refrigerator.
Off-street parking is available and the house is near bus lines and within walking distance of local shopping, grocery stores and employment opportunities.
Rules and Regulations
Stays can last anywhere from two months to a year and a half. Each resident interviews with a resident manager to determine where they are in the recovery process. Once accepted, the new member develops an individualized recovery plan with the staff that includes participation in a 12-step program and finding a sponsor. Throughout each client’s residency, their plan is reviewed and adjusted as necessary.
In the first three months, residents attend counseling for nine hours a week. After four months, clients are allowed weekend passes. Visitation is allowed after the first three months.
While at Beacon House, residents must seek and maintain employment, pay rent, attend and participate in on-site recovery education and maintain their 12-step program. Beyond AA, Beacon House’s overall treatment philosophy is to teach clients about living in sobriety from a holistic perspective, developing ways to strengthen mind, body and spirit.
Through one-on-one counseling and group therapy, residents learn substance-free coping strategies, how to find employment, money-management, communication skills, self-reliance and relationship skills. Beacon House rarely accommodates those with a dual diagnosis, generally referring them to other facilities. Those who are taking medication, including opiate blockers, Prozac and psychotropic drugs, are also referred to other facilities.
Extras
On the first Friday of each month, a member of the Beacon House board of directors hosts a question-and-answer session at the house to hear from residents about what could be done to improve the residential recovery experience. Outside members of AA also tell their recovery stories at these sessions. Board members are in charge of hosting guest speakers on every other Friday.
In Summary
Beacon House Aftercare in Louisville, Kentucky has been a sober living facility for men since 1996. For the past 20 years Beacon House has helped hundreds achieve recovery and maintain sobriety as a safe and therapeutic environment for residents to transition from treatment to community re-entry.
