TRTThe Basics

Treatment Recovery Transitional Center (TRT) began in 2013 when friends Tony Springer and Tony West founded a residence for adults in recovery from substance abuse. In the last two years, the “Two Tonys” have opened a total of six recovery houses in Houston. These non-clinical facilities are designed to provide a safe, stable place for clients to develop sober living and self-empowerment. Recovery here is rooted in 12-step philosophy.

Accommodations and Amenities

Maximum capacity for all of TRT’s houses is 55 people. The houses are split by gender, with three designated for men and three for women.

Since these are all converted homes, bedroom sizes vary, but most rooms sleep two to three. Some larger rooms sleep six and there are no single bedrooms available. The number of roommates a client has depends on price. The most expensive, “semi-private” room in the most upscale building costs $1,195 a month, while the most basic accommodations are $650 a month.

Food is provided by the facility and prepared by residents. Meals include a simple breakfast and lunch and a more elaborate “family dinner.” According to Springer, there’s usually a cook or chef staying at the facility so the meals are good.

Residents can expect a number of social events and outings, including barbecues, pool parties, and special parties and events for younger residents. The houses have gym equipment, movie rooms, outdoor pools, Jacuzzis, computers and Wi-Fi. TRT also provides some transportation services to residents to sober activities and events outside the house and therapeutic retreats.

Rules and Regulations

Most of the residents at TRT are referred from more structured inpatient facilities and have come to require a less intensive level of care. TRT doesn’t offer clinical counseling of any kind, although it does host AA, NA and CA meetings and educational sessions for residents. Many TRT residents attend counseling outside of the facility, including Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP).

All residents are expected to be working some kind of recovery program; sponsorship is required. If residents are employed, they aren’t required to attend house meetings during work hours, nor are those in IOPs expected to attend house meetings during therapy times. Unemployed residents not in an IOP are expected to get up for morning meditation and attend various meetings at the house that cover topics like anger management, relapse prevention and parenting.  Residents stay on average for about 60 days.

Over 10 house managers are employed by TRT, including a LCDC. The rest have no official credentials but all have recovery experience.

In Summary

TRT’s recovery homes may be the right choice for men and women who are ready to assume personal responsibilities again and start adjusting to the regular pace of life while staying sober. A client looking for fellowship in his or her recovery would do well to consider this organization. According to the program’s owner, the camaraderie of the TRT living experience can provide important tools for recovery. “We find that what works is when people take ownership of their own recovery and expect the same from others.” Springer says. “They say, ‘We’re trying to change our lives, and you can either come along with us or get out of the way.’”
