The Basics
Run by the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s medical school, the Beacon Addiction Treatment Center (BATC) has been providing outpatient substance abuse treatment for over 25 years to residents of Birmingham and Jefferson counties. The mission of this small facility is to better the lives of addicts and their families by providing therapy for and education about recovery from chemical dependence.
Treatment and Staff
BATC’s therapeutic treatment is evidence-based and also relies on 12-step methodology. Clients are initially evaluated so an individualized treatment plan may be determined. Plans are a combination of individual and group therapy, with the frequency of sessions dependent on the needs of the client.
BATC offers three levels of outpatient care—“brief outpatient,” Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and day treatment. Members of the brief outpatient program attend a group session once a week for 10 weeks. The IOP meets three times a week, typically for between eight and 28 weeks. The most intensive level of care offered at BATC is day treatment. Clients in that program meet five days a week and most are in the program for four to six weeks before entering the IOP.
Detox and inpatient care are not offered but the facility refers those in need to appropriate resources. Because their recovery needs can be different, BATC offers groups specifically for men, women and adolescents.
The clinical staff at BATC is made up of LPCs, social workers, MFTs and case managers. Every member of the clinical team has experience in working specifically with substance abuse-related issues.
BATC’s pricing is based on income. After an initial charge of $40 for intake, fees are charged on a sliding scale based on ability to pay but even those with no income can be treated at BATC.
Extras
Along with substance abuse programs, BATC provides clients with case management to help with problems like getting access to health care and housing issues. Groups are offered in the mornings and in the evenings so clients can continue in work or school.
In Summary
With its experienced staff and commitment to results-oriented treatment, BATC would be a good choice for someone looking for an outpatient program that is evidence-based but equally supportive of clients working a 12-step program. While its outpatient programs are intensive, those in need of 24-hour care of a residential program should look elsewhere.
