The Basics

Action Family Counseling (AFC) operates four Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and three residential treatment programs in southern California. AFC was founded by Cary Quashen, who has been in recovery for over 35 years. Quashen currently serves as Executive Director of Henry May Newhall Memorial Hospital’s Behavioral Health Unit and has worked in the recovery industry for over 20 years.

AFC’s outpatient programs focus on addiction education and leading clients through the 12-step framework. It operates an IOP for adolescents and adults in Simi Valley, a prosperous suburb north of Los Angeles that is home to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The Simi Valley clinic is located on Apricot Road, near the Ronald Regan Freeway. AFC also operates a residential program in the nearby city of Piru.

Treatment and Staff

AFC Simi Valley’s adolescent groups are restricted to clients who are 12 to 17; adult groups are for all clients 18 and over. After an initial assessment, clients are given a treatment plan that includes group therapy three times each week and individual therapy as-needed. Most clients complete their IOP treatment plan in 12 weeks.

Groups, which meet weeknights and Saturdays, are led by addiction counselors, primarily CADCs, and the clinic is overseen by an MFT. The treatment team uses a harm reduction approach to treatment and helps clients improve their coping skills through CBT and exploring family systems. Groups address topics such as early recovery issues, relapse prevention and creating boundaries. Clients are also required to attend at least three 12-step meetings each week, and group therapy often facilitates clients using the 12-step framework.

While co-occurring disorders are addressed in group therapy, clients are referred to nearby mental health clinics for dual diagnosis support, including medication management.

Extras

Clients are asked to bring family members in for family therapy once a week. Once they’ve completed their treatment plan, clients can attend a weekly aftercare group for relapse prevention and participate in AFC’s Alumni gatherings, such as picnics and barbecues.

In Summary

Action Family Counseling has been providing reliable outpatient and residential treatment to the residents of southern California for over 30 years. Its Simi Valley IOP treats adults and adolescents and serves as an effective step-down option for those leaving its nearby residential program in Piru. It also offers family counseling and guidance in using the 12-step framework, ensuring that clients have a strong sober support network upon leaving treatment.
