The Basics
Second Chance Sober Living provides sober living for men as well as housing for couples wishing to live in a sober environment. Using the 12-step principles, Second Chance residents are introduced to meetings, sponsorship and step work. With three homes in Oklahoma City, Second Chance clients are immersed in a safe and sober environment where they develop family-type bonds to help them continue their road to long-term recovery.
Accommodations and Amenities
The Second Chance locations are all single-story homes that accommodate up to eight residents in three bedrooms—two bedrooms are triple-occupancy and the third room is reserved for couples. The couple’s room has a full-sized bed, dresser, closet and en-suite bathroom, while the other bedrooms have one single bed plus bunk beds, a shared closet and two shared dressers. There is one additional shared bathroom. All linens and towels are provided, but residents may bring their own if they choose.
The homes have a living room with comfortable sofas and ample seating for the two weekly mandatory in-house meetings. TV and a landline phone are available for communal use. Homes have garages for additional storage, with washers and dryers for self-serve laundry. There are also outdoor seating areas and backyards.
All three houses are located in quiet residential neighborhoods close to public transportation and employment opportunities.
Rules and Regulations
Second Chance has a strict abstinence policy and drug or alcohol use is cause for immediate eviction. Should a resident come home intoxicated, they will immediately be asked to pack their belongings and leave with a referral to a treatment facility. Drug testing and Breathalyzer exams occur regularly at random and refusing to take a test will result in consequences at the discretion of the management.
Second Chance relies on 12-step programs to assist their residents in recovery. Finding a sponsor and working the 12 steps is required of all clients within their first week of residence. All house members must attend five meetings per week—three off-site community AA/NA meetings and two closed in-house meetings. Clients are also encouraged to find a home group and volunteer for a service commitment to that group. Residents have meeting attendance cards that must be signed by meeting secretaries and are monitored by the house managers.
All house residents are expected to get jobs and pay their rent (which includes the cost of supplies and drug and Breathalyzer tests). Clients live in Second Chance homes for an average of 30 to 90 days and, during their stay, the curfew is at 11 pm on weeknights and midnight on weekends. House chores are assigned weekly and rotated regularly. Residents are expected to keep their personal and all shared spaces tidy and to respect the house rules, the house managers and other residents at all times.
In Summary
Second Chance offers structured living for men and couples seeking to extend their recovery. With required regular meeting attendance, a foundation in the 12 steps and an involved management team, potential clients can expect to work diligently on their self-improvement and sobriety. Couples seeking affordable sober living with private accommodations may find Second Chance homes offer a good balance between fellowship, accountability and privacy.
