The substance abuse and mental health clinics are located at the Tribal office in Fredonia, at the gateway to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. For over 20 years Kaibab Paiute has been providing comprehensive services for tribal members in Coconino County.
Treatment and Staff
The first step in obtaining substance abuse treatment is an assessment. After evaluation, clients are assigned to appropriate group and individual therapy sessions. In addition to substance abuse treatment, those with co-occurring disorders are referred to the on-site tribal mental health clinic. The number of weekly sessions and duration of treatment is based on each individual’s needs. All services are free to tribal members and their families with a sliding scale offered to members of other tribes residing within Coconino County. While adolescent groups are not available, individual counseling is provided for those aged 16 and under. As with the adults, the number of weekly sessions and duration of treatment is on a case by case basis.
Treatment methods include the 12 steps, CBT and The Red Road to Wellbriety—a culturally-specific Native American book of healing. This recovery method includes 12 chapters about healing from alcoholism and addictions, “how-to” information about working the 12 Steps in a Native way and 17 personal recovery stories from Native Americans and others who have used a combination of Native culture, a Medicine Wheel and the 12 Steps approach.
Group therapy topics include addiction education, relapse prevention, managing stress and a goals group. Family counseling is also available and is limited to 10 individuals and their loved-ones. All individual and group sessions are facilitated by a LADC. Attendance of on-site AA/NA and Al-Anon meetings is encouraged.
Extras
Weekly urinalysis testing is done for those who are court ordered. There is also an eight hour DUI program.
