The Basics
The George Schmidt Centre is a new addition to The Kinghaven Treatment Centre campus and network in Abbotsford, British Columbia. A sober living complex with 30 self-contained single apartments for men, The George Schmidt Centre requires residents to have at least two months of sobriety before admittance and allows them to stay for up to 18 months. The Centre has been in operation for nearly four years.
The Kinghaven Treatment Center network includes programs and facilities with specialized options for men, women and women with children who are seeking a safe and supportive environment.
Accommodations and Amenities
The newly constructed apartments feature twin beds, sitting areas, kitchens and full bathrooms. The complex has a laundry facility and a fitness center open to residents three days a week. While each resident has his own kitchen, many choose to pool resources and cook communal meals.
The Centre employs a live-in support worker who provides extra support and supervision in the evenings. Limited parking spaces are available for residents with vehicles but the facility is easily accessed by public transportation.
Rules and Regulations
Residents aren’t required to be employed, but they must be actively engaged in finding work, enrolled in school or volunteering in the community. Residents with an income are required to pay 30% for room and board though there is a cap of $880 per month.
Family members are welcome to visit in the downstairs lounge, but cannot visit the residents’ apartments.
Extras
Residents can attend peer support meetings within walking distance. A unique feature of the Centre is that all residents are eligible to attend Kinghaven’s Enhancement Program, which is located on campus. The Enhancement Program received a million dollar grant to develop case management services and job training workshops. It also has a history of success in helping clients access funds for on-going education.

The George Schmidt Centre is a newly-constructed complex of sober living single apartments for men who have at least two months of sobriety. It has few rules and regulations, offering residents the autonomy to learn to make the daily choices that fuel their recovery. However, clients have access to a multitude of supportive services from Kinghaven’s Enhancement Program, enabling them to set and achieve ambitious professional and educational goals while in residence.
