recovery councilThe Basics

The Recovery Council was founded in 1977 in Waverly, Ohio, by a group of citizens who had banded together to discuss the growing issue of drug and alcohol abuse in America. Over the years, the organization has expanded their substance abuse and mental health services to include adult residential treatment, transitional care for women, a coed Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for adults as well as individual counseling and assessments. The Recovery Council also operates an outpatient facility in Chillicothe that uses a mixture of evidence-based therapies and the 12 steps to teach clients how to live a sober life. Thanks to coverage from Medicaid, those who receive treatment here do not have to pay out of pocket.

Accommodations and Food

The Recovery Council’s Georgie Harris House consists of two residential homes for women while the nearby Ed’s Place accommodates men. Each house has 15 beds, with bedrooms shared between two to four clients at a time. The rooms feature twin-sized beds and a cozy atmosphere. Each house also has several bathrooms shared among the bedrooms. The downstairs area of each home has a kitchen, dining room and a living room with a TV. Smoking is permitted outside of the homes.

Three meals a day are provided for clients and special dietary requests can typically be accommodated. Options vary from day to day, though they often include fresh salads, meats, soups, pastas and desserts. Caffeine and sugar are permitted.

Treatment and Staff

The Recovery Council provides a wide range of services for both substance abuse and mental health issues. All programs use a blend of evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT in conjunction with the 12 steps. Group sizes tend to be around 15 people each for both residential and outpatient, with gender-specific treatment available in the residential programs. While detox is not offered at any location, recommendations to outside facilities can be made upon request.

Residents in the inpatient programs typically stay for six months. During this time, they attend daily group therapy and one individual session per week. Group topics include relapse prevention, 12-step work, life skills, processing and anger management. There are also discussions about the dangers of alcohol and drug abuse. Clients also attend up to five on- and off-site AA/NA meetings.

The adult coed IOP meets three times a week for three hours at a time and consists of a mixture of daily group therapy and weekly one-on-one counseling. The program allows clients to receive therapy and monitored support while returning at the end of the day to their home lives. All therapy follows a similar structure to the residential programs. Clients are encouraged to attend AA/NA meetings during their free time, although this is not required. The length of time spent in the program depends on the individual.

In addition to residential and outpatient care, The Recovery Council offers individual counseling for adults and adolescents and specialized group therapy for adults focusing on issues like domestic violence, life skills coaching, co-dependency, parenting, mental health and anger management.

The staff in all the programs consists of LADCs and licensed social workers, with a counselor-to-client ratio of one-to-five.

Extras

The transitional care, known as Recovery House, allows women to transition back into everyday life while still providing services that support a drug and alcohol-free lifestyle.

Case management is available and may include court support, visits to the doctor, GED courses, college admission assistance, housing assistance and the integration of social support systems including AA/NA. Drug testing is done on-site.

In Summary

The Recovery Council offers a full spectrum of care for substance abuse. Rooted in evidence-based therapies and the 12 steps, clients can get the best of both recovery worlds. With small group sizes and individualized attention at an affordable price, each client receives the type of experience they need to thrive.
