circle houseThe Basics

The Circle House is a group of three sober and transitional living facilities in West Palm Beach and Lake Worth, Florida. The program was founded in 2009 by owner Dave Pulgliese, who noticed while working at a treatment facility that many program alumni were relapsing due to a lack of nearby sober living homes. The Circle House’s homes focus on following the 12 steps while providing men with a structured environment where they can stay sober.

Accommodations and Amenities

The three Circle House locations are known as Weymouth House, Blue House and Lakewood House. They can accommodate a total of about 48 residents in apartment-style homes with a mix of shared master suites and double-occupancy and private rooms.

The master suites can each host three clients at a time and come complete with private bathrooms and spacious walk-in closets. All the bedrooms have full-size beds, personal dressers and a shared desk. The residences have state-of-the-art appliances in the kitchens, as well as granite countertops and dishwashers. Living rooms have multiple couches for lounging in front of the huge, flat-screen TVs with cable. High-speed Internet is available at all the locations and clients also have 24/7 access to house computers. There are on-site washers and dryers in all of the facilities, with detergent, linens (with the exception of towels) and cleaning supplies provided.

Clients may bring their own vehicles to the facilities, but all houses are situated in areas with readily available public transportation, as well as grocery stores, restaurants and shopping.

All the facilities have two live-in managers who are available 24 hours a day and provide any assistance residents may need, including referrals to outside treatment programs or counseling services. Clients who choose to do an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) are eligible for a reduction in rent.

Rules and Regulations

To live at one of the houses, all residents must participate in daily AA meetings and be actively working the steps. Within two weeks of move-in, clients are expected to have a full-time job and a sponsor. Because there are so many meeting locations within walking distance of the facilities, establishing a home meeting is also encouraged.

The minimum required stay at The Circle House is four months and, during that time, clients must complete regular assigned chores, attend weekly house meetings and obey curfew (10:30 pm for the first 30 days; after that, 11:30 pm on weekdays and 12:30 am on weekends). There are weekly randomized drug and alcohol screenings and those who refuse to participate are immediately discharged.

Clients may have visitors at the facility if approved by house staff. Residents are prohibited from entering any bedrooms or apartments that are not their own without permission. Each of the homes has designated outdoor smoking areas.

In Summary

The Circle House gives men who are in early recovery a peaceful place to learn the ins and outs of what life can be like without drugs and alcohol. While there is a level of accountability and structure, the staff and program offer skills and support that make it all more than worthwhile.
