British Columbia CanadaThe Basics

Life Recovery’s mission is to provide women seeking substance abuse treatment with a structured environment conducive to recovery with a foundation in the Christian faith. The non-profit opened its doors in 1999 in Abbotsford, British Columbia, a large city adjacent to the Greater Vancouver Metropolitan Area.

Life Recovery’s primary program is a three-month residential treatment program, referred to as Phase One. Phase Two is a sober living residence for successful graduates of the first phase. Clients are invited to stay in the sober home for up to a year.

Accommodations and Food

Both residences are located in leafy suburban areas of Abbotsford. During Phase One, women have roommates and shared bathrooms and then in Phase Two, they are given their own room. As part of their life skills training, clients in Phase One take turns preparing meals for the house. In Phase Two, clients are responsible for their own cooking.

The homes have TVs and DVD libraries for recreation. There’s also a gym in the Phase One house and all clients are encouraged to take morning walks in the neighborhood.

Treatment and Staff

The 12-step framework is the foundation of treatment at Life Recovery. Clients are required to attend daily community 12-step meetings and counselors use the 12-step framework in group and individual therapy.

Phase One clients have daily chore assignments and then embark on a full day of treatment groups, which include psychoeducation groups that discuss the disease of addiction and co-dependency, processing groups that address relapse prevention and other recovery skills and experiential therapy including music and art therapy. The program also includes daily devotionals, and Biblical principles are discussed throughout treatment groups.

The treatment team is primarily made of CACs during the first phase and a “house mom” in the second who provides support and supervision. Clients in need of dual diagnosis support are transported to a nearby mental health clinic for additional therapy and medication.

Extras

Phase One Clients with children can have them visit the house on weekends. After 21 days, clients can begin volunteering at Life Recovery’s Thrift Store to learn job skills. In Phase Two, the staff brings clients to Triangle Community Resources for further job skills training and helps them find housing.

In Summary

Life Recovery provides Christian-oriented residential treatment and sober living for women in British Columbia. Its long-term programming allows residents to learn life skills in a cooperative living environment while developing trust in their fellow residents and treatment team.
