The Basics
Since 1992, University of Maryland Shore Regional Health has been providing outpatient treatment for substance abuse in its Addiction Services program. Treatment is available at its clinic in Easton, Maryland, 45 miles south-west of Dover, Delaware.
As a member of Shore Regional Health’s provider network, which includes clinics and hospitals throughout Maryland, Addiction Services clients have access to therapy using evidence-based methods as well as comprehensive dual diagnosis support and case management services.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment is offered at both an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient levels of care. IOP clients attend group therapy three times a week for 12 weeks and typically have individual therapy every other week. Standard outpatient clients typically attend group therapy once a week and have individual therapy as-needed. Standard outpatient treatment plans typically last six months.
Therapy incorporates CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12-step framework. Clients are also required to attend peer support meetings such as AA/NA, SMART Recovery or Celebrate Recovery, the frequency of which they decide with their primary counselor.
Clients with co-occurring disorders meet with a psychiatrist for additional therapy and medication management for mental health diagnoses. While Addictions Services doesn’t provide Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid addicts, those in the care of outside physicians can attend the clinic for the therapeutic component of their treatment.
The treatment team includes CADCs, psychiatrists, LPCs and registered nurses.
Extras
After they complete their initial treatment plan, IOP clients may attend a weekly aftercare group for an additional 14 weeks. Clients can also bring family members to individual therapy sessions for family counseling.
In Summary
For over 20 years, University of Maryland Shore Regional Health’s Addictions Services program has provided standard outpatient and IOP treatment to residents of eastern Maryland. With dual-diagnosis care as well as peer support requirements, both treatment tracks ensure clients have the opportunity to address mental health diagnoses and create a healthy sober support system.
