LifehouseThe Basics

Lifehouse Sober Living is an organization providing sober living for men in Fort Myers, Florida. Founded in 2010, Lifehouse now operates three separate homes all located with in a couple blocks of each other in a quiet, residential neighborhood.

Accommodations and Amenities

Lifehouse accommodates up to 23 residents across their three locations. Two of the houses can host up to six residents, and the third—a much larger house—can accommodate up to 11.  Each client shares a room with another, and the master bedroom in the larger home sleeps three.

Each house has a TV room, communal computer station and weight bench for fitness. The largest of the three houses also has a pool and barbecue area. Residents are allowed to socialize regularly, with the hopes of developing a tight-knit sober community within each house. Although Lifehouse does not provide food for its residents, there are a number of highly affordable nearby food banks for low-income residents, as well as traditional grocery store chains.

The operations manager appoints a house captain in each home who oversees the residents, enforces house regulations and keeps the peace among clients. All residents are assigned daily chores and must help with house upkeep. On Sundays, clients work together to deep clean the house and outdoor areas.

Rules and Regulations

Lifehouse requires residents to attend four AA/NA meetings a week and to find a sponsor within the first two weeks. For the first 30 days each client resides in a Lifehouse home they must observe a 10 pm curfew. Residents are also required to sign in and out whenever they go on or off-campus.

Lifehouse breathalyzes all residents nightly along with regular drug tests to ensure sobriety. The house has a zero-tolerance policy for abstinence from drug and alcohol use, and if a client tests positive for either substance they are required to pack an overnight bag and leave the house within 20 minutes.

Residents are also required to attend a mandatory house meeting every week, where house issues and recovery progress are discussed.

Extras

Lifehouse regularly has Sunday barbecues in the larger house’s backyard pool area. Clients can also enjoy outings to area beaches and parks, and year-round great weather.

In Summary

Overall, Lifehouse is a great option for men looking for an affordable sober living with a lot of independence and a 12-step foundation. The social environment between the three houses provides residents with a solid support system as they go through recovery. While those with a history of relapse may need more structure and guidance, others will appreciate the relatively relaxed atmosphere found at Lifehouse.
