Tri-County CounselingThe Basics

Founded in 2005 in the Sarasota suburb of North Port, Florida by Dr. Thomas Glaza, Tri-County Counseling and Life Skills Center, doing business as Tri-County Counseling (TCC), provides outpatient addiction treatment. Having attained non-profit status in 2006, it offers prevention programs, court-ordered services, case management and life skills counseling. Its programs employ a holistic, non-12 step approach to treatment, with the belief that clients are not addicts or alcoholics for life. Besides its main office in North Port, TCC has two other facilities in Osprey and Port Charlotte.

Treatment and Staff

New clients undergo a comprehensive assessment with an intake counselor to determine the duration and intensity of treatment. Those requiring detox are referred to a local hospital. All clients receive individualized treatment plans that work within the structure of individual and group therapy using evidence-based practices, such as CBT, solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) and Motivational Interviewing (MI). As a non-12 step program, TCC does not believe in the disease model of addiction, nor does it support the concept that addicts are genetically predisposed to Substance Use Disorders.

Groups are offered once a week at each facility. Clients in the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) attend three weekly groups, offered from 6:30 to 9:30 pm—Mondays at Osprey, Wednesdays at North Port and Thursdays at Port Charlotte. Groups average about 10 clients per session. Additionally, clients attend in individual therapy once a week.

The facility also employs Reality Therapy (Choice Theory) during treatment, which focuses on helping clients connect to the present, change negative behaviors and make better choices. Clients learn to identify their rationale for abusing drugs and alcohol, as well as recognize current needs and wants. After this discovery, they are taught to change harmful thinking patterns by developing positive reasoning.

While TCC does not offer medication management for co-occurring disorders, clients requiring this service are provided with psychiatric referrals.

Besides CEO Dr. Thomas Glaza, staff includes a Master’s-level mental health counselor and several licensed therapists.

Extras

TCC provides DUI education classes for criminal justice clients. Other services include life skills counseling, case management, mental health counseling, family and couples therapy and crisis counseling.

In Summary

Tri-County Counseling is a good option for those who may be adverse to the more traditional 12-step approach to treatment or are just looking to explore alternatives. It offers a sliding scale fee to financially challenged clients and its three locations give men and women the option to attend treatment at a facility that’s convenient for them.
