The Basics
Sioux Falls Veterans Administration Health Care System provides US Veterans with outpatient substance abuse treatment in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan regions in the Midwest. The VA is committed to advocating for people affected by mental illness and substance abuse using proven treatment practices combined with alternative healing approaches that are tailored to the unique issues veterans face post combat.
The Sioux Falls VA works with The Stanford School of Medicine and the University of South Dakota to offer residency programs in internal medicine, psychiatry and geriatrics. Sioux Falls VA’s outpatient program has been in operation since 1996 and provides referrals to regional VA inpatient programs for those needing a more intensive level of care for substance abuse.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are enrolled in either the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) or the standard outpatient treatment track. IOP clients attend group therapy three to five times a week and have individual therapy once a week. The average duration of IOP treatment is four weeks, and clients often then step down to the standard outpatient track. Veterans who do not live locally may be provided with hotel lodging nearby while attending treatment.
Standard outpatient clients usually meet for group therapy twice a week and have individual sessions as-needed. This less intensive track usually last six weeks.
Groups explore relapse prevention, handling triggers and recovery issues. The treatment team includes psychologists, Master’s-level mental health counselors and LACs. Clinicians use evidence-based methods including CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance-Commitment Therapy (ACT) and DBT. Clients in need of dual diagnosis support work with a psychiatrists in the Sioux Falls VA mental health department, and those in need of inpatient dual diagnosis care are referred to a regional program in the VA system that specializes in psychiatric treatment.
While enrolled in outpatient treatment, clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings, and the Sioux Falls VA hosts at least one AA/NA meeting on-site each week.
Extras
Clients are invited to attend a weekly continuing care group for aftercare and may invite family members to sessions for family counseling if the treatment team thinks it would be beneficial.
The Sioux Falls VA also hosts weekly T’ai Chi and yoga classes and recently launched an app to coach those suffering from PTSD.
