The Basics
Western Kentucky Medical opened its doors three years ago to provide outpatient Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to opioid addicts in Hopkinsville, a small Southwestern Kentucky community. Western Kentucky Medical has two sister clinics—Simpson Treatment in Franklin and Daviess Treatment Services in Owensboro. Currently, all three facilities provide treatment using methadone.
Western Kentucky is a member of the Pinnacle provider network which operates a number of outpatient and residential facilities throughout Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Virginia, Ohio, Minnesota and Michigan.
Treatment and Staff
After clients are assessed, they receive a treatment plan that includes individual and group therapy in addition to medication. Clients must attend an orientation session, which addresses HIV prevention and the clinic’s policies and procedures, as soon as they’re admitted to the program. In their first phase of treatment, which usually lasts 90 days, most clients have weekly individual and group sessions. With successful attendance and clean drug screens, clients can step down to less frequent therapy.
The treatment team at Western Kentucky includes LCADCs, CADCs, nurses and physicians. Counselors also help clients locate peer support meetings such as Methadone Anonymous if they think it would be helpful, and referrals are given to nearby mental health facilities for those needing dual diagnosis support. Groups use CBT and other evidence-based modalities to address early recovery issues, handling triggers and relapse prevention.
Western Kentucky hopes that eventually all clients will not need MAT, and it strives to create a treatment plan that culminates in tapering, if they desire. However, clients are not pressured to taper on any set time-line.
After clients have completed 90 days of treatment, they can begin applying for take-home doses of methadone.
Extras
Western Kentucky encourages families to take part in treatment and welcomes them to attend individual therapy sessions for family counseling and various group sessions on addiction education topics.
In Summary
Western Kentucky Medical and its two sister facilities in Owensboro and Franklin have provided MAT for opioid addiction for more than three years. With numerous processing groups and a family-friendly treatment environment, Western Kentucky Medical is committed to helping clients improve their emotional, professional and interpersonal lives as they begin their recovery.
