The Basics
For over 50 years, Triumph Treatment Services has been providing drug and alcohol treatment programs for addicts, safe housing for the homeless and a range of other social services to men, women and children around the state of Washington. Triumph Treatment Services: James Oldham Treatment Center is a men’s-only short-term residential treatment program for alcohol and drug abusers that was created 30 years ago by James Oldham, who firmly believed that those suffering from chemical dependency and the families who love them deserve a chance to recover, regardless of their economic situation. The James Oldham Treatment Center (JOTC) aims to help alcohol and drug addicts recovery using proven research-based treatment that centers around the individual, the 12 steps and education.
Accommodations and Food
Located in Zillah, Washington, JOTC renovated an old school and turned it into a 78-bed treatment center for men. The classrooms have been carpeted and converted into nine dormitory-style sleeping quarters with both singles and bunk beds, and each resident has his own armoire with a lock. There’s a TV in each of the group rooms, a universal gym with weights and cardio equipment donated from the YMCA as well as a lecture hall with a giant projector for group session and guest speakers. Because JOTC is located in a rural area, there’s plenty of outdoor spaces for the men to spend their free time, including a basketball hoop, a volleyball court, a horse shoe pit and a garden.
Two sets of cooks work in the dining room and create unique meals and snacks for the residents. Vending machines for hot and cold snacks as well as soda are accessible throughout the day. Residents who are extremely undernourished upon arrival at JOTC usually gain 15-20 pounds during their 30-day stay here.
Treatment and Staff
JOTC is a non-medical residential treatment center with a 12-step foundation and individualized treatment plans. While the length of stay is usually 30 days, JOTC supports and considers extensions based on the needs each individual. Clients receiving MAT are accepted, but there is no dual diagnosis support. In addition to several on-site AA/NA meetings each week, group and individual therapy, clients also attend daily educational lectures led by JOTC counselors or guest speakers. These presentations focus on substance abuse, recovery and other relevant issues depending on the needs of the clients at the time.
There are six licensed CDPs on staff, as well as CDP trainees, clinical supervisors, medical technicians and administrators. There are no medical doctors on staff, so clients in need of additional care are transported off-site to medical professionals.
JOTC accepts all types of funding—Medicaid, private insurance, tribal pay and cash.
Extras
Aftercare is an important part of JOTC’s treatment program. Staff help residents transition to sober living environments convenient to their home base, as well as outpatient treatment programs to help sustain lasting recovery.
Though accommodations at JOTC are basic, clients have access to a community garden, where some of the men find a great deal of therapeutic benefits from cultivating plants. Art is encouraged, but not required, and staff provide any materials they can to support each of their client’s hobbies.
In Summary
While JOTC accepts private insurance and out-of-pocket payments, they are largely a short-term residential treatment center aimed at helping men who are down on their luck recover from addiction through intense education, the spiritual approach of the 12-steps and traditional therapy. Recognizing that everyone’s needs are different, JOTC carefully considers each client’s cultural background, aiming to meet individual needs.
