The Basics
For over 20 years, Shasta County’s Health and Human Services department has helped the county’s pregnant women and those with children up to age 18 battle substance abuse through its Perinatal Substance Abuse Treatment Program. The facility is located in Redding, a city in Northern California, 150 miles north of Sacramento. Shasta County provides treatment at the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) level of care, and clients are eligible for transportation and childcare services while in treatment.
Treatment and Staff
The length of Shasta County’s program is six months, with an additional two months of aftercare. For the first four months, clients attend treatment three-and-a-half hours a day, four days a week. During months four through six of treatment, they attend treatment for two hours a day, two days a week.
The treatment team at Shasta County includes MFTs and CASACs, and treatment consists of group therapy and psychoeducation classes as well as individual therapy scheduled as-needed.
Therapy uses the Matrix Model and the Beyond Trauma curriculum as well as Trauma-Informed Care (TIC). Classes include parenting skills, budgeting and health skills. Clients in need of dual diagnosis support can receive therapy at the facility and medication management from Shasta County’s Behavioral Health department.
Clients are encouraged to attend peer support meetings such as 12-step or SMART Recovery two to three times a week. The treatment team also helps clients access other services and coordinate health care through case management meetings once a week.
Extras
Once clients complete their treatment plan, they can attend a weekly relapse prevention group for two months of aftercare. Family counseling is also available if loved ones wish to participate in treatment.
In Summary
For over two decades, Shasta County’s Perinatal Substance Abuse Treatment Program has helped pregnant women and women with children heal from substance abuse through compassionate, long-term outpatient treatment. The program provides clients with evidence-based therapy as well as life skills classes, ensuring that they learn how to manage addiction triggers as well as how to better manage the day-to-day lives of their families.
