yakima washingtonThe Basics

Triumph Treatment Services has provided drug and alcohol treatment programs to residents of Yakima and throughout Washington state for over 50 years now. While it offers programs for men, women and children—including those who are battling homelessness and substance abuse—Triumph is best known for opening the first Washington state residential substance abuse treatment program exclusively for pregnant women and mothers with young children.

Donated 25 years ago by the Riel family, the Riel House is part of the Long Term Pregnant and Parenting Woman’s Program (PPW), which gives mothers a safe place to receive long term treatment without losing custody of their children. At the Riel House, mothers are able to establish stable recovery and learn critical parenting skills while their children receive therapeutic child care at the same facility.

Accommodations and Food

Located in a cul de sac in downtown Yakima, The Riel House is one of three programs offered in Triumph’s PPW. The other two—Beth’s Place and Casita—are situated on the same campus and offer similar services. The Riel House is a cottage with 16 private rooms, all of which can accommodate one mother and one child (though exceptions are made for up to two children, depending on availability). Additionally, there are outdoor spaces surrounding the building for clients to enjoy outdoor time, and a nearby park for the kids to play. Licensed child care for infants, toddlers and preschoolers is available on site while mothers are in therapy.

There’s a TV in the community room for families to watch movies during weekend hours. No other electronics are allowed on site, including cell phones or any devices with internet capabilities. A dining room is located in the cottage and meals are provided by a commercial kitchen next door.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at The Riel House is 12-step based, and generally lasts six months. Because duration of treatment is entirely individualized, the length of stay is flexible and totally dependent on the needs of the client. Women enrolled for long term care treatment at Riel House are referred by social workers and must have Medicaid, and their child (or children) must be under the age of six. Residents are expected to have already completed detox before arriving, as these services are not available on site.

In addition to licensed therapeutic child care providers, the Riel House has two residential support staff, two licensed CDPs, a registered CDP trainee and a registered mental health nurse who can administer medication. Dual diagnosis support is available, but clients are transported off site to a psychiatrist if necessary. Group therapy, 12-step meetings and education groups are at the heart of the Riel House’s treatment, but individual therapy is offered weekly as well.

Residents have very structured days, starting with education groups which can include lessons on chemical dependency, child care, parenting and anger management. Afternoons are reserved for activities, free time and off-site appointments for mothers or their children. Twelve-step meetings are scheduled in the evenings three or four times a week.

All clients must be on Medicaid—self-pay and private insurance are not available at this time.

Extras

The Riel House is extremely committed to setting clients up for success upon leaving, so aftercare is an integral aspect of the treatment program. Before clients leave, they are set up with clean and sober housing as well as any required documents to function out in the world, including a Social Security card and an ID. Triumph works with multiple community services—including PCAP—to help mothers and pregnant women with their needs outside of treatment.

During their six-month stay, clients also receive one-on-one time with a parent educator who teaches them tools specific to their child and family situations. Free shuttles to off-site services, including dentist appointments and doctors visits, are provided. There are also domestic violence classes, Seeking Safety groups and art therapy.

In Summary

The Riel House is committed to providing a safe environment for mothers and their children and teaching the necessary tools to stay clean and sober. This non-profit organization centers recovery around education, developing a loving and healing environment for the family, a combination of therapies and the 12-step framework, helping women change their behavior and focus on a spiritual recovery.
