The Basics
Rosebud Sioux Tribe is based in South Dakota with lands stretching across the Rosebud Indian Reservation and all of Todd County. Established in 1889, the reservation provides both land and services for the Sicangu Oyate and Lakota tribal community, including chemical dependency services at both outpatient and inpatient levels of care with dual diagnosis support for those struggling with mental health diagnoses. The primary focus of treatment in the RST reservation is for alcohol and crystal methamphetamine abuse.
Treatment and Staff
The RST outpatient program is free for registered tribe members. General community members who do not identify as native can also seek treatment, but may have to pay according to a sliding scale fee. Prior to admission, clients must schedule an appointment for an assessment which determines whether a client has co-occurring disorders and any need for medication. Dual diagnosis support includes medication management and specialized therapeutic care.
Basic outpatient treatment services are scheduled twice per month on Fridays. While the program hours are minimal, clients are given the opportunity to stay accountable throughout the recovery process by attending group and individual therapy with credentialed staff and peers in recovery
The treatment program is culturally focused and utilizes Native American spirituality in addition to evidence-based practices. Between treatment days, clients are encouraged to attend the facility for sweat lodge sessions and visits from medicine men. Attendance of 12-step and White Bison meetings is also encouraged to help clients develop both their cultural identity and a peer support network.
Services are led by credentialed professionals including CADCs and CSWs. Additionally, clients may also see a psychiatrist for medication and additional assessments.
Extras
RST offers clients a wide range of services that go beyond chemical dependency treatment. At the headquarters in Rosebud, clients can receive medical treatment, job placement assistance and information about Tribal events.
Special groups are also available, including adolescent support, DUI/DWI offender groups and services for clients in the criminal justice system. Services are also available for the hearing impaired and services in the Lakota language.
In Summary
The outpatient chemical dependency program at Rosebud Sioux Tribe offers culturally-sensitive treatment for adults and adolescents who are registered tribal members. Though services are limited to a basic level of care, hours are flexible and time efficient, enabling clients to focus on personal development and the cultivation of community. Sessions are scheduled twice per month, but in between therapy, clients attend meetings, sweat lodge sessions and healing ceremonies that are unique to the Sioux Tribe .
