Located in Arlington, Virginia, the Phoenix House Boys Recovery Lodge provides residential treatment for male youth between the ages of 14 and 17.

The tale of Phoenix House’s inception began 49 years ago. In 1967, six heroin addicts met at a detox unit in Manhattan and were worried about relapsing since they didn’t have a firm foundation in recovery. Founder Mitchell S. Rosenthal, M.D. stepped in and Phoenix House was born. Since then, the organization has grown to serve 10 states with 120 facilities.

Accommodations and Food

Located inside a spacious Colonial-style building, the Boys Recovery Lodge has a 20-bed capacity. The grounds include white cherry blossom trees and a pristine lawn. The boys reside in double or triple occupancy dorm-style rooms.

They are served three meals daily, along with nutritious snacks and healthy beverages including milk and water.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission, clients undergo a in-person interview with staff members. While detox is not available, referrals are provided. Clients with co-occurring disorders are accepted as long as they are mentally stable. Typical length of stay is 75 days but this can vary depending on the client.

At the Boys Recovery Lodge, the belief is that drug and alcohol addiction is a brain disease that causes self-destructive behaviors and with the proper treatment, clients can recover and lead productive lives. With that in mind, the highly disciplined Therapeutic Community (TC) approach is used. The TC model includes behavior modification, which works on transforming negative conducts into positive behaviors. The boys are assigned tasks that teach self-respect and accountability. While peers are allowed to point out negative behaviors, this is done in a supportive and safe environment.

The program provides group and individual therapy and attendance at on-site 12-step meetings is required. Group topics include trauma, abuse, anger management, relapse prevention, conflict resolution and eating disorders.

A staff psychiatrist offers medication assessments for clients suffering from trauma, depression and anxiety. There is also a residential supervisor, primary counselor and medical director, as well as addiction counselors and clinical directors.

Extras

During regular school days, the boys participate in an online academic program, led by a local teacher. The family program includes counseling sessions and educational groups.

In Summary

There is no coddling at the Boys Recovery Lodge, but many young clients who successfully complete the program become grounded, healthy, clean and sober individuals.
