The Basics
Wellmore Behavioral Health is the result of two non-profit organizations coming together to form a community of recovery. Based in Connecticut, WBH’s services are available from Waterbury to Naugatuck Valley—serving 43 communities. Children, adolescents, adults and families can access a range services including substance abuse support, case management, crisis intervention, home-based care and prevention. Outpatient and residential treatment are available for those seeking treatment for substance abuse, with a specialty program for women and children. Dual diagnosis support is also available as is mental health treatment for domestic violence and trauma.
Accommodations and Food
The women and children’s facility is a home-like setting. Mothers are accommodated with up to one school-aged child in shared units with private bedrooms, while pregnant women are typically put together in similar units sharing a kitchen and bathrooms. Clients learn how to cook and create their own food, often sharing meals communally. An outdoor area is available for children, and childcare is also available on the property.
Treatment and Staff
The Women and Children’s program is designed for pregnant women or postpartum women with a young child. This residential track provides women with round-the-clock care as well as care for their children.
Prior to being enrolled in treatment, all clients are screened with a bio-psycho-social assessment which determines the need for extra services and informs the staff of any and all trauma which may be contributing to addiction or mental health issues. The clinical staff use evidence-based treatment, including CBT and DBT. Clients are also seen by physicians and other medical practitioners to ensure they are healthy during and after pregnancy. HIV and Hep C testing is offered.
Clients attend daily group therapy and individual therapy is an essential part of treatment. The women also attend psychoeducation groups to help them understand the reality of chemical dependency and its effect on children. Domestic violence education is another essential aspect to the treatment effort.
Cients are introduced to 12-step meetings and program elements. The women are encouraged to continue attending meetings following cessation of treatment, and learn the importance of working the steps with a sponsor. Clients learn parenting skills, life skills and begin their recovery with stable footing.
All treatment is carried out by mental health professionals who can provide trauma-informed care and experience with perinatal care. A staff of LCSWs, LPCs, LPNs and LADCs assist clients with their recovery.
Extras
WBH gives women assistance and guidance to develop themselves and their children. Clients are linked with Head Start programs so they may develop knowledge and a healthy beginning for their children. Additionally, pregnant clients are transported to and from medical appointments.
Additional substance abuse programs include an outpatient services and a therapeutic shelter for men and women.
In Summary
Wellmore Behavioral Health offers special mental and behavioral health programs for women and children and expectant mothers who are struggling with addiction and co-occurring mental health issues. The services incorporate trauma-informed care with evidence based treatment methods and the 12-steps, and focus on helping women heal from domestic violence. Women are given a safe and comfortable home in which to recover, and credentialed staff teach the essential skills for a healthy life of mental, emotional and physical recovery.
