Next Step Intensive Outpatient Program

The Basics

Located about an hour outside of Chicago Next Step Intensive Outpatient Program in Crystal Lake, Illinois, offers outpatient substance abuse treatment to teens, ages 13 to 18, and young adults, ages 18 to 25. Serving the suburbs north of the city, Next Step treats young people who have completed a residential program elsewhere or those who don’t require inpatient-level care but may benefit from an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).

Next Step’s founder, Mandy Rosenmayer, has been providing substance abuse services for 15 years and the Director, Rick Atwater, over 30. Atwater is also an author and hosts an Internet radio show about recovery.

Treatment and Staff

The initial assessment lasts about two hours and for clients who are under 18, requires a parent to be present. Based on the assessment analysis, an individualized treatment plan is created that includes up to eight hours a week of individual and group therapy and substance abuse education; however, the majority of treatment is done in a group setting. Topics include decision-making skills, stress management, self-esteem, job seeking, relapse prevention and lifestyle choices. Treatment lasts from eight to 10 weeks, with random drug screenings throughout as a measure of compliance. The Young Adult groups meet from 1 to 3:30 pm Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays and the adolescent groups run from 4 to 7 pm on the same days.

Treatment employs evidence-based practices, like DBT, CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI), which are used in group and individual sessions. Other therapeutic methods include Psychodynamic Processing and trauma-informed care. Clients are also introduced to the 12 steps.

Staff consists of MFTs and LCSWs.

Extras

Family members are asked to attend a family education and orientation session after the first week of treatment and a therapy session near the end of treatment. An aftercare plan is developed for each client in the program.

Next Step Intensive Outpatient Program’s evidence-based treatment combined with a a specialized approach allows it to offer a remarkable level of support to young people facing addiction. If the cost of treatment is prohibitive to some, the facility employs two specialists to facilitate finding grants and insurance coverage.
