Serenity Grove

The Basics

Serenity Grove is a CARF-accredited residential treatment facility for alcohol and drug addiction about 35 miles south of Athens, Georgia. Located near Lake Oconee, in a town called Greensboro, Serenity Grove has an ambulatory detox and a 30-day inpatient program. After graduating, aftercare services, including an Intensive Outpatient Day Program (IOP) and evening outpatient, are offered nearby at the affiliated Athens Addiction Recovery Center. Treatment uses evidence-based modalities and holistic therapies.

Accommodations and Food

Located on the banks of beautiful Lake Oconee, this private, luxurious home can admit up to 12 clients at a time. Residents share comfortable gender-specific bedrooms at a maximum of two people to a room. Clients have in-house treatment and peer support groups, in addition to being provided transportation to the to the AARC treatment building in Athens. All meals are included and prepared on-site.

Treatment and Staff

New clients begin with an assessment so that an individualized treatment plan can be created. Medically-supervised detox is provided for opioid withdrawal. This includes Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) with buprenorphine, as well as medical check-ups and daily counseling.

The residential program generally lasts 30 days, although the length of treatment can vary. The daily schedule includes case management, and group and individual therapy. Evidence-based modalities, including CBT and DBT, are used in conjunction with psychoeducational sessions. Groups address the 12 steps, relapse prevention, coping skills and stress reduction approaches. Dual diagnosis support is offered and an MD is available to see clients who require medication for co-occurring disorders.

Serenity Grove was co-founded by Karen Skinner who is a CADC with more than two decades of experience in the field of recovery. The staff also includes a MD who serves as Medical Director and a psychologist. Other team members include an RN, CADCs, LCSWs and a certified Recovery Coach.

Extras

Holistic options include yoga, experiential and music therapy, massage and meditation. Family involvement is encouraged, and a family program is offered on weekends.

Aftercare includes individual and group therapy at the AARC facility, per client’s needs. Referrals to sober livings and recovery support groups, including 12-step meetings, are provided.
