The Basics
Recovering addict Debbie Perkins founded Acme Ranches Transitional Living in Palm Beach, Florida in 2012. As the name suggests, Acme Ranches is a transitional care program, providing clients with a safe place to stay while they attend outpatient treatment at one of several local drug rehabs including Recovery Associates and Transformations Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center. Acme Ranches Transition Houses was originally for women, but expanded in 2013 to include men.
Accommodations and Amenities
Acme Ranches offers four houses in Palm Beach County, including one for women and three for men. An average of 12 clients live in each single-family ranch-style house. Clients are paired off in large dorm-style bedrooms. Other amenities include flat screen TV’s and an animal friendly environment. Besides allowing clients a chance to bring along a fur baby, the ranch is home to a horse, a potbelly pig and a goat.
While food is not provided, most clients qualify for food stamps. Residents shop and prepare meals together, and eat family-style in the evenings.
Rules and Regulations
Clients must attend an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at one of the nearby substance abuse treatment facilities while staying at Acme Ranches Transitional Living. At Acme Ranches, a typical length of stay is six months. Requirements include attending three off-site 12-step meetings a week, getting a sponsor and working the steps. Acme Ranches Transition Houses administers random operates drug or alcohol tests and operates on a zero tolerance policy regarding clients failing the test or refusing to take it. The curfew is 10 pm nightly for all residents.
Staff facilitates gender-specific groups that focus on a topic pertinent to early recovery. Topics include anger management, nutrition, life skills and time management. Interactions with the animals provide therapeutic benefits. Perkins, who has a Master’s-level addiction coach certification, is hands on with her clients. Clients are taught life skills that include money management, resume writing and banking. Additionally, they receive backing when they look for work, enroll in school or volunteer in the local community. Those trying to get SSI benefits are also assisted with the application process.
Extras
Acme Ranches Transitional Living homes are all a short distance away from the beach. The pet friendly facilities are open to clients bringing along a canine friend, as long as it’s not a pit bull (for insurance reasons).
In Summary
Perkins has empathy for her clients, having endured many challenges in her own life, which lead her down the path to addiction. After finding recovery with the 12-steps and rebuilding her life, her mission is being of service to other fellow addicts and alcoholics. This is a highly structured 12-step oriented house, but there are extra perks including the animal therapy. While equine therapy is relatively common in addiction recovery, Acme Ranches might be the first halfway house to boast caprine therapy.
