In 1967, ispired by a passage in the AA Thought of the Day book, recovering alcoholic Gene Duffy and his wife, bought an old hot springs resort in Calistoga, California. They renovated it into Duffy’s Napa Valley Rehab. Situated on 18 acres of land right next to the Napa River, Duffy’s offers a full range of substance abuse treatment including detox, three inpatient programs and aftercare. Although the residential treatment facility is co-ed, the number of men outweighs the women nearly two-to-one. Duffy’s welcomes clients ranges between 18 and 80 years old.

Accommodations and Food

Duffy’s Napa Valley accommodates up to 55 residential clients at a time. The main rustic ranch-style building houses women on the top floor. Men live in separate buildings. Clients are paired in dorm-style rooms. For those who desire more secluded accommodations, gender-specific villas provide private rooms. The women’s villa has a six-bed capacity, including two double and two private rooms. Furnishings include twin beds, an old fashioned armoire, dressers and a private patio. The Villas include a kitchenette, swimming pool and living rooms. The male villa includes three private rooms, of which one has a California king size bed, closet, dresser, desk, chair and a bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub.

The rehab believes that good nutrition is necessary for successful recovery. At Duffy’s Napa Valley, a private chef prepares meals. Clients are provided four freshly prepared meals a day, including a snack at 9:30 pm. Special needs, including vegetarian and vegan are accommodated. Entrees include a fresh salad, a main course with fresh veggies, soups and desert. Some favorite meals are prime rib, chicken parmigiana and shrimp salads.

Treatment and Staff

The admission process takes about an hour and includes meeting with a physician (if appropriate), reviewing medical history, taking drug and alcohol screening tests, signing paperwork and submitting a down payment.

If necessary, detox lasts up to seven days, and ranges from $800 to $3000, depending on the protocol. Medication-assisted treatment with or Vivitrol or Suboxone is used to ease withdrawal symptoms from alcohol or opiates. While Duffy’s Napa Valley provides detox, they are not a medical facility. They employ the services of a local doctor who makes daily rounds and staff provides around-the-clock monitoring.

Clients receive individualized treatment plans, and length of inpatient care varies between 30 and 90 days. Utilizing a 12-step approach, the program includes daily group therapy, individual therapy (twice per week), educational seminars, a relapse prevention series, step study and daily attendance at open AA/NA meetings on the premises. Groups are scheduled from 8 am to 6:30 pm. Topics include anger management, resentments, peer support and Big Book Study.

At Duffy’s, formal dual diagnosis support is not provided but clients are free share about co-occurring disorders during one-on-one sessions and the on-site doctor can prescribe refills for medication. Educational sessions utilize recovery dynamics, teaching clients about recovery and the disease through a 12-step point of view. Additionally, clients are expected to complete the first three steps. The 60 and 90-day program parallel the 30-curriculum but offer more educational classes, as well as have clients complete steps four through seven.

The staff of 20 includes seven Master’s-level CDACs as well as techs and support staff.

Extras

Round trip limousine transportation is provided to and from the nearest airport for out-of-state clients. The cost is $200.

Once a week, clients are free to hop on a Shopper’s Bus and head into town. For all graduates, free aftercare is provided for up to a year.

In Summary

Although Duffy’s offers time-tested rehab in a beautiful location, those with co-occurring disorders may not find the kind of specialized help they need and clients seeking an on-site gym or regular exercise regime should keep hunting for other options. Aside from that, for 12-step aficionados who want to soak in natural surroundings, Duffy’s Napa Valley is a great match.
