Nicasa Behavioral Health is a not-for-profit behavioral health services organization about an hour north of Chicago in Lake County, Illinois. Nicasa was established in 1966 to serve recovering alcoholics and their families by members of a local Alcoholics Anonymous group. Today, Nicasa has eight locations and offers outpatient counseling for young people under the age of 18 at the Round Lake, Waukegan, Highland Park, Buffalo Grove and Zion offices. Other Nicasa services include Bridge House, a recovery home for adults and the Judy H. Fried Center, a facility that provides gender-specific Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adults in North Chicago. All Nicasa’s services are certified by CARF.

Treatment and Staff

Nicasa’s youth services begin with a comprehensive assessment that reviews all aspects of the young person’s life, including history of substance abuse, school, family, work and friends. From this assessment, counselors make treatment recommendations appropriate for each unique situation. These can include education, life skills classes, early intervention, outpatient and IOP. For clients with co-occurring disorders, Nicasa provides consultations, evaluations and psychotherapy for depression, anxiety, mood disorders, cutting and other self-harm behaviors.

Both the basic outpatient track and the IOP combine individualgroup and family therapy, which incorporates a CBT methodology. The difference between tracks is the number of hours spent in session each week; clients in the IOP are required to attend a minimum of six hours, while the basic track only requires up to six hours. Specialized individual therapy as well as medication management are available for clients requiring dual diagnosis support.

Services are overseen by Master’s-level and licensed mental health therapists. Additional staff includes CADCs, case managers and LPNs.

Extras

Nicasa’s youth programs work in conjunction with local police departments to provide a program called Teen Court—an alternative sentencing option for first time youth offenders, ages 10 to 18. The program targets juvenile offenders of misdemeanor crimes such a theft, curfew, trespassing and possession of drugs or alcohol. Successful completion prevents kids from having a criminal record. The sentences typically consist of community service hours and a TRACK class (Taking Responsibilities and Accepting Choices through Knowledge), which entail an evaluation and may include therapy, letters of apology, essays or other related tasks. To participate in Teen Court, clients must have no gang affiliations and admit to their offense. The fee for participation is $50.

In Summary

Nicasa Behavioral Health’s youth substance abuse treatment programs offer unique options for care at several convenient locations in northern Illinois. These affordable, niche programs give young people a chance to right their wrong and reintegrate into their families and the community using newly developed social and life skills.
