The Basics
Nicasa Behavioral Health is a not-for-profit behavioral health services organization about an hour north of Chicago in Lake County, Illinois. Founded in 1966, Nicasa was created by members of a local Alcoholics Anonymous group to provide services to recovering alcoholics and their families. Since then, Nicasa has grown to include eight locations; these include Bridge House, a recovery home for adult men and women and the Judy H. Fried Center, a facility that offers gender-specific Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) in North Chicago. There are also outpatient counseling locations in Round Lake, Waukegan, Buffalo Grove, Highland Park, Mundelein and Zion. All Nicasa’s adult outpatient services are certified by CARF.
Treatment and Staff
To register, clients must make a one-hour intake appointment. Nicasa’s counselors make outpatient treatment recommendations based on this evaluation. Nicasa’s Judy H. Fried Center offers gender-specific treatment for men and women with substance abuse problems. The facility offers day or evening IOP, which entails nine hours of group and individual therapy a week for an average duration of 18 weeks. Treatment is evidence-based, offering CBT, as well as psychoeducation and an incorporation of 12-step philosophy. Specialized individual therapy as well as medication management, are available for adults with co-occurring disorders.
Nicasa’s outpatient locations also offer Alcohol and Other Drug (AODA) education, provided in a four-session class that incorporates 10 hours of risk reduction education on alcohol and other drug use. These facilities provide outpatient treatment at several levels, including Moderate Risk Treatment, which is 11 hours of group counseling in addition to ADOA, and Significant Risk Treatment, which includes 19 hours of group counseling in addition to AODA education. Those in the High Risk Treatment track must complete 74 hours of group counseling. For non-DUI offenders, the hours may vary based on a counselor’s recommendation.
The staff includes Master’s-level therapists, CADCs, case managers and LPNs.
Extras
Clients of the Judy H. Fried Center have access to comprehensive support services such as childcare, transportation, meals, self-sufficiency and job skills training, referrals for health care and domestic abuse counseling and parent education.
Additional services include mental health assessments and treatment, gambling intervention and anger management classes. Day, evening and weekend appointments are available in English and Spanish.
In Summary
Nicasa Behavioral Health’s outpatient substance abuse treatment programs offer a variety of options at several convenient locations in northern Illinois. Treatment is available to both self-referred and court-ordered clients and funded in part by Lake County Community Development Block Grant and the Illinois Department of Human Services. This is a solid, affordable option for adults in the area seeking outpatient treatment for addiction.
