The Basics
Since 1990, Desert Hills Hospital has provided a number of treatment programs for children and adolescents struggling with mental health and substance abuse in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Its Oak and Cypress facilities treat adolescent boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 18 with co-occurring disorders. Desert Hills’ has additional programs for developmentally disabled youths and those exhibiting sexually maladaptive behaviors.
Under the Acadia Healthcare umbrella, Desert Hills Hospital is included among an expansive international group of behavioral health facilities providing chemical dependency and therapeutic support. With its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, Acadia serves communities across the country and in the UK with inpatient, residential, outpatient and school-based treatment programs.
Accommodations and Food
Girls are housed in the Cypress unit and boys in the Oak unit of the treatment facility. Residents have roommates and take their meals in the facility’s cafeteria. All clients have chore assignments and can earn privileges—such as day passes—as they maintain their responsibilities and meet expectations. The facility also features a gymnasium with exercise equipment, and residents are encouraged to work on their physical recovery to support the mental and emotional aspects of addiction.
Treatment and Staff
Most clients stay at Desert Hills for three to six months. They attend school on-site, which is administered by a local charter school. After school hours, they have group and individual therapy which follows the Matrix Model, using CBT and other evidence-based modalities to teach coping skills and relapse prevention. In the evenings, residents do homework and attend on-site AA/NA meetings. Most treatment groups are gender-specific.
Each resident has a primary counselor who supports him or her through the program. The treatment team includes physicians, nurses and Master’s-level therapists and addiction counselors such as LPCs and LADCs.
Residents also have experiential therapy each week, including art therapy and a ROPES course. Equine and pet therapy are also available.
Extras
Desert Hills also has Zumba classes and guardians can take the students off-campus for day trips if the treatment team thinks it would be beneficial. Desert Hills plans to open two group homes later this year for young clients with co-occurring disorders.
In Summary
For over 25 years, Dessert Hills Hospital has provided comprehensive mental health and substance abuse treatment to Albuquerque’s most at-risk youth. Its Oak and Cypress co-occurring disorders programs offer teens an opportunity to receive intensive treatment in a stable environment while maintaining their academic grade level and staying close to their families.
