The Basics
Hope House was founded in 2002 in LaPrairie, Minnesota, a small town near George Washington State Forest. The organization provides residential treatment to adult men through its gender-specific Hope House Men’s Program.
Accommodations and Food
The men’s program at Hope House is operated out of a large house in a quiet neighborhood. The residence has a total of 24 beds but generally has no more than 22 occupants at any given time. All of the bedrooms at Hope House are doubles and each client is assigned a twin bed, closet, dresser built into the bed-frame and a small study area with a desk.
Hope House has a dinning room, lounge area, library with books and DVDs, laundry room and multiple rooms for group and individual therapy. Clients are allowed to smoke cigarettes in a designated outdoor smoking area. Hope House has Wi-Fi throughout and clients are allowed to have cell phones, laptops and tablets.
The organization has a cook that prepares three meals a day for the clients. Although the food is prepared from a set menu, the chef can accommodate clients with dietary needs and restrictions. Hope House also has a coffee machine and snacks in the dining room throughout the day.
Treatment and Staff
Men interested in Hope House begin the admission process by providing an intake coordinator with a copy of their Rule 25, medicine list and psych evaluation. Individuals must also have medical insurance to qualify for Hope House and must present the intake coordinator with a proof of insurance before beginning treatment. Those in need of detox services are referred to outside providers as Hope House does not facilitate it at this time.
Hope House’s residential program is 90 days and consists of both group and individual counseling. Each client’s daily schedule varies, but there are an average of four sessions per day. The group sizes vary, with some groups including all clients and some including only three to eight. Counselors aim to address each client’s individual needs in the meetings and use education, sharing, relapse prevention and some CBT. Individual sessions are scheduled accordingly per client need. The organization integrates 12 step recovery principles into treatment. Clients are also required to attend at least two outside support groups per week.
Hope House is equipped to provide dual diagnosis support and offers a group specifically designed to address the needs and issues of clients with co-occurring disorders. All clients in the program also meet with the organization’s psychologist once a week. The organization’s counselors are all LADCs.
Extras
The organization provides clients with passes and transportation to the local YMCA. The house also has a quaint walking path nearby that clients regularly explore. Residents are allowed to apply for five-hour long day passes after their initial five days at Hope House, and overnight passes after 30 days of treatment.
Hope House also employs two recovery coaches that meet with clients throughout their stay to assist them with aftercare planning. This planning is aimed at helping client’s transition smoothly out of Hope House and focuses on helping clients find housing, job searching and finding potential outpatient programs for continued care.
There is a family program that consists of a large group meeting on Saturday or Sunday. This meeting consists of the clients, their family members and the counselors and is aimed at addressing codependency issues as well as providing the family members with substance abuse education.
In Summary
Hope House Men’s Program is a highly intensive and robust residential treatment for adult men. The strong focus on integrating the 12 steps and intensive aftercare planning allows clients to transition out of Hope Haven with a strong foundation for sobriety. Also, the co-occurring disorder group provides a necessary component for clients struggling with both substance abuse and mental health issues.
