The Basics
Founded in 1986, Western Psychological Counseling Services, PC is a behavioral health facility that provides outpatient counseling for addiction and co-occurring disorders. The organization has a number of locations throughout Oregon, including Beaverton, Gladstone, Gresham, Hillsboro, Portland, Tigard and Tualatin as well as offices in Vancouver, Washington. Treatment plans are flexible and individualized, with programs available for court-ordered and self-referred clients alike.
Treatment and Staff
Clients begin with an initial intake and psychiatric assessment so that their specific needs can be determined. Though each program may vary, the facility offers several treatment tiers— beginning with an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that meets a minimum of three times a week for nine hours total. A slightly less intensive option is standard outpatient, which meets for eight hours a week or less, though both are considered Phase I programs. The Phase II relapse prevention track meets for an hour and a half weekly and is offered only as a step-down from Phase I. In both programs, treatment consists of individual, group and family therapy that uses evidence-based practices, such as DBT and Seeking Safety. Groups cover a variety of topics, including the physical and neurobiological effects of addiction, coping skills, mindfulness training and spirituality.
Finally, Phase III meets for an hour and a half every month and consists only of group sessions, though clients can add individual therapy as necessary. Though 12-step participation is recommended, clients are encouraged to attend other self-help groups as they wish. All programs require clients to submit to regular urinalysis testing.
Staff includes psychiatrists, psychologists, LCSWs, LMHCs, CADCs, LPCs, LMFTs, mental health nurse practitioners and additional Master’s-level clinicians.
Extras
Special groups are available for adolescents and LGBTQ clients. As a form of aftercare, the program has a Phase IV alumni group that meets once a week for an hour. These are less formal, client-led sessions that focus mainly on relapse prevention. Other services include counseling for autism, school-based prevention programs, nicotine cessation groups and health psychology seminars through partnerships with local health organizations.

The staff is wide-ranging in certifications and its programs are available for all phases of early recovery.
