Located about an hour west of Albuquerque, New Mexico New Sunrise Regional Treatment Center is a specialized residential substance abuse care facility for Native American Youth ages 13 to 18. Operated by the Indian Health Services, Sunrise is also the administrative headquarters for five hospitals, eleven health centers and 12 field clinics. These facilities serve 20 Pueblos, two Apache bands, three Navajo Chapters, two Ute tribes and numerous tribal members who live, work or go to school in the Albuquerque area.

Accommodations and Food

There are three different buildings that make up the New Sunrise Regional Treatment Center; the girls’ unit, the boys’ unit and the administrative building with the offices where treatment happens. The female unit houses a total of eight girls and the male unit consists of two houses—with eight in one building and eight in the other.

Genders are separated most of the time and meals are served cafeteria-style in shifts. Most dietary restrictions can be accommodated.

Treatment and Staff

New Sunrise Regional Treatment Center offers a wide variety of treatment approaches. Upon being admitted in the facility, clients are given a diagnostic assessment of their physical and mental health, substance abuse history and family and social relationships. Then, each new resident is given an individualized treatment plan and they meet regularly with their counselor to review their progress. The length of the program and each resident’s stay is decided on a case by case basis and dependent on each their needs and treatment goals.

New Sunrise Regional Treatment center offers dual-diagnosis support, so they provide medication management and psychiatric care, as well as individual and group therapy. To address substance abuse issues, New Sunrise Regional Treatment Center uses a CBT approach which incorporates the 12 steps and also provided education groups or social skills workshops. While there are 12-step meetings at the facility, clients are also escorted off-site for other meetings and encouraged to become involved in activities in the nearby sober Native communities. Since New Sunrise Regional Treatment Center is a treatment facility specifically for Native Americans, there are planned activities to maintain and enhance cultural appreciation, including moccasin making, pottery, workshops on traditional farming methods, native cooking and sewing and welcoming spiritual healing. Traditional Native speakers and sweat lodge and reflection room ceremonies are also available.

To continue their academic education there are two licensed teachers and one education assistant in the education department that give each resident academic instruction or GED preparation and the curriculum also includes three hours about Native History. The staff includes a program director, an intake coordinator, family therapist, team of psychologists, nursing staff for comprehensive health care, social services assistant supervisors and substance abuse specialists. The residents are also supervised by trained staff 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
