Mujeres RecoveryThe Basics

Mujeres Recovery is a sober living home in East Los Angeles, California for women ages 18 and up. It operates through the California Hispanic Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abusean organization that provides treatment to low income clientele in the LA area, with a specific focus on the Hispanic community. The house serves clients under the jurisdiction of CA Prop 36, the Substance Abuse and Crime Prevention Act and those who have been sentenced to treatment programs through drug court. Voluntary clients are accepted as well.

Accommodations and Food

Mujeres Recovery is located on a quiet street in the historic neighborhood of Highland Park. The house has space available for up to six women in double-occupancy dormitory style rooms. There is a large common area with cable TV which residents can enjoy during down time. The facility also has a shared kitchen and dining area with modern appliances.

All residents’ groceries are included in the house rent, though the meals must be prepared by clients. Typically, the women work together to prepare meals or take turns dividing up kitchen duties.

Rules and Regulations

Women interested in staying at Mujeres Recovery must commit to a stay of 90 days. They also must have at least 30 days sober before moving in. Participation in a 12-step program such as AA or NA is mandatory for all clients, with transportation to and from meetings provided daily. Residents are also required to work with a sponsor and agree to random drug and alcohol testing which is done on-site.

While an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is not offered on-site, women immerse themselves in daily classes on topics such as relapse prevention, parenting skills and meditation. The classes are led by experienced staff members. The staff members at Mujeres Recovery check in with residents on a daily basis, and there is at least one house manager available on-site 24 hours a day. After two months in the program, residents are given visitation rights. During this time, clients are required to search for a job, pursue education or seek volunteer opportunities.

Staff members at Mujeres Recovery include LADCs, CADCs, many of whom are also in recovery.

Extras

Because Mujeres Recovery is geared primarily towards Latino clientele, Spanish language services are available. Recreational activities are arranged for residents during their time as well, which can include hiking, museum visits and movie nights.

In Summary

The residential program at Mujeres Recovery Home provides a supportive and safe environment for adult women seeking a sober community. For Spanish-speaking women, Mujeres is an affordable and intimate sober living experience.
