The Basics

Based in Fort Collins, Colorado, Narconon Colorado offers long-term residential substance abuse treatment on an expansive seven-acre property located on the outskirts of the small city. An institution since 1971, Narconon is an international organization with multiple facilities in the United States and across the globe, including centers in Russia, Egypt and Australia. The organization is widely known for its unconventional treatment methods and affiliations with the Church of Scientology.

Accommodations and Food

Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the Narconon Colorado facility is a sprawling campus that accommodates between 20 and 30 male and female clients at a time. Clients undergoing the detox process receive their own room during this three to five day period, but following that, share a room with one roommate for the duration of their stay. Rooms are dorm style, with twin beds and clients typically stay at the facility for three months. All meals are provided on-site, cafeteria style in the facility’s dining hall and clients can expect to share all three meals together.

Treatment and Staff

As previously mentioned, a client’s stay at Narconon Colorado begins with a detox. While the facility offers both a “medical” and social detox, it’s worth noting that the Narconon method eschews certain conventional detox methods and believes strongly in the use of vitamin compounds, particularly niacin, during this process. The second major component of detox period and a staple of the Narconon program in general is the sauna room which involves extensive periods spent in the on-site sauna to sweat out the vestiges of any leftover toxins.

Following this, clients spend the majority of their stay at Narconon Colorado attending “therapeutic training routines” courses and daily classes. While the facility does employ a medical doctor, a CAC, an LADC and a LPC, traditional recovery models are eschewed for these classes which include a “learning improvement” course, “communication and perception” course, an “ups and downs in life” class and a “the way to happiness” class.

Narconon Colorado does not follow the disease model of addiction and there is no introduction to 12-step recovery at the facility. Furthermore, there is no dual diagnosis component or acknowledgement of co-occurring disorders offered at the facility. There is an aftercare program offered in the form of regular communication with Narconon Colorado staff typically for a year after a client’s completion of the inpatient program.

Extras

Recreational activities are abound at the center, with an on-site basketball court, volleyball court, pool table, horseshoe pit, television room and gym, which clients can utilize during their daily free periods. While there are few off-site excursions, clients do attend off-site church services on Sundays.

In addition to this standard aftercare plan, clients who complete the inpatient program at Narconon Colorado also have the somewhat unconventional option of staying at the facility for an additional six months for no additional cost and essentially joining the staff of Narconon Colorado, working with new clients and receiving free room and board and a small stipend each week.

Though the location and setting of Narconon Colorado mirrors that of a typical inpatient facility, potential clients looking for the staples of a more conventional rehab experience should note that Narconon Colorado eschews many standard features of modern recovery, such as 12-step foundations and a dual diagnosis component for an emphasis on vitamin and sauna-based detox practices and educational classes.
