The Basics
Established over 30 years ago, White Deer Run Allenwood provides detox and residential substance abuse treatment for men and women in Allenwood, Pennsylvania—a rural area 70 miles north of Harrisburg. The Allenwood facility is a part of the White Deer Run network with branches located throughout Pennsylvania.
Under the Acadia Healthcare umbrella, the White Deer Run group is included among an expansive international netowork of behavioral health facilities providing chemical dependency and therapeutic support. With its headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, Acadia serves communities across the country and in the UK with inpatient, residential, outpatient and school-based treatment programs.
Accommodations and Food
The Allenwood campus sits on a former farm. With 150 wooded acres populated by several traditional buildings that were formerly residences and barns, men and women are housed in separate, gender-specific buildings. All residents usually have three roommates and the homes have porches and ample common areas featuring traditional décor.
A kitchen staff prepares standard American fare served in the campus cafeteria. The campus also features free laundry facilities for residents. Clients can use the house phones to call home three times each week. The campus features an Activities house where residents can watch TV, play games and use a weight room. The Activities House also has a volleyball net and basketball court. Personal cell phones and computers are not permitted.
Treatment and Staff
Residents in need of detox stay in a dedicated unit for five to seven days, depending upon acuity. The average stay in residential treatment is 28 days (including detox). Men and women live separately and only participate in gender-specific recreational activities and treatment groups.
Each day begins with reflection time, chore assignments and a community meeting. Residents then partake in up to six groups each day. In addition to group therapy, clients have individual therapy at least once each week and several psycho-educational lectures on the disease concept of addiction, coping skills and mental health issues in recovery. Treatment uses the 12-step framework, CBT, Choice Theory and Motivational Interviewing (MI).
In the evenings, clients complete treatment assignments and attend on-site AA/NA Meetings. On weekends and evenings, residents can also take part in additional recreational and experiential therapy activities such as yoga, t’ai chi and a ROPES course.
The Allenwood treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists such as MSWs, CADCs and physicians and nurses who are all experienced in providing dual diagnosis support, including medication-management for mental health diagnoses.
Extras
Family therapy is available if the treatment team thinks it would be beneficial. For aftercare, the treatment team refers clients to outpatient facilities that meet their treatment and geographic needs. The White Deer Run treatment network regularly holds a variety of alumni get-togethers throughout Pennsylvania.
In Summary
White Deer Run of Allenwood provides residential treatment and detox for men and women on a large rural campus in North-Central Pennsylvania. By offering gender-specific treatment on a large, wooded campus, Allenwood creates a peaceful, distraction-free atmosphere to focus on one’s addiction and mental health.
