partners for changeThe Basics

Partners for Change is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility in Swan Lake, Maine with programming designed to help clients with co-occurring disorders. The facility was founded by Dr. Rebekka Freeman, a psychologist who gained her experience in recovery under the guidance of Pia Mellody at The Meadows in Arizona. Still, Freeman’s own recovery has also shaped her vision for the practice. Dr. Freeman’s log cabin—her “Raven’s Nest”—is connected to her practice at the same location. Dr. Freeman also recently partnered with Dr. Karen Kelley to offer further outpatient programming, including treatment for those addicted to food, sex, gambling and tobacco.

Treatment and Staff

Partners for Change offers substance use evaluations, assessments and interventions with clinical supervision. The facility also offers a unique treatment approach. Dr. Freeman “accidentally” came upon a hypnotherapist when she attempted smoking cessation. She found that the hypnosis dispelled her anxiety significantly and made her more open to the recovery process. As a result, Dr. Freeman became certified in hypnosis to bring the method to her practice.

The facility offers Post Induction Therapy, CBT, Neurolinguistic Re-programming, Clinical Hypnosis, trance-work, life coaching, spiritual coaching and individual, group and family therapy sessions. Clinical Hypnosis and trance-work are designed to provide emotional management techniques. Both doctors encourage attendance at 12-step programs off-site in addition to therapy.

Clients are also encouraged to take up a yoga practice or similar outlet for the stresses and anxiety of early recovery. Individual and group therapy sessions last 90 minutes each, three days a week, depending on each individual’s course of treatment. Length of treatment is similarly variable.

Dr. Freeman is a licensed hypnotherapist, LADC, Licensed Clinical Practicing Counselor (LCPC) and a PsyD. Dr. Kelley holds LADC, LCPC and Ph.D certifications.

Extras

For those who can’t attend treatment at Partners for Change’s relatively remote location, the facility also offers counseling and coaching sessions online using Skype and FaceTime.

In Summary

Overall, Partners for Change offers a range of therapeutic techniques that are not often found in outpatient programs designed for co-occurring disorders. Dr. Freeman’s methods, along with the serene rural setting of her practice and home on Swan Lake, offer a creative approach to substance abuse treatment. Those interested in a holistic take on recovery should find a supportive atmosphere at Partners for Change.
