The Basics

Founded in 1924 in Durham, North Carolina, Duke University Hospital is a major leader in medicine. The hospital includes 938 acute care beds and 19 beds in the adult psychiatric unit. The Duke University Health System network also offers outpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment options, including the Duke Family Care Program founded in 1994, that serves mothers or mothers-to-be who are suffering from chemical dependency.

Treatment and Staff

Potential clients must be pregnant or have children under 18 either living at home or in foster care. The Duke Family Care Program uses evidence-based modalities, specifically CBT and a gender-responsive model that focuses on female issues. Treatment length varies per client, depending on their recovery goals.

Weekly treatment includes two group sessions and one individual session, case management and family therapy according to the client’s needs. The groups are held from 9 am to 11 am on Tuesdays and Fridays at Lincoln Community Health Center. Group topics include parenting, relapse prevention, healthy relationships, trauma and substance abuse awareness.

At Duke Family Care Program, clients have the option to receive individual counseling sessions in their homes. These services are provided as part of the program’s attempt to encourage women to continue treatment in spite of issues like a lack of transportation or childcare. During one-on-one sessions, co-occurring disorders are addressed as the underlying causes for addiction.

Led by program director Toby McCoy, a Master’s-level clinical psychologist, the rest of the staff include three LCSWs, of which two hold Master’s-level credentials.

Extras

At the Duke Family Care Program, additional services include referrals to inpatient care, assistance with Child Protective services of those who have lost custody of their children, transportation, and assistance for pregnant clients with their prenatal appointments at Duke’s Ob-Gyn clinic.

In Summary

While this outpatient program caters to a specific demographic, and their counseling protocol is a little on the light side, This s an excellent program for women who are serious about building a better future. Clients receive the support of highly-credentialed professionals who are committed to protecting their health and improving their well being and that of their children.
