The Basics
Millcreek Behavioral Health was founded in 1988 to provide residential treatment to Arkansas youth with developmental disabilities and mental health and co-occurring disorders. Located in Fordyce, Arkansas, a small town 70 miles south of Little Rock, Millcreek offers holistic treatment which includes evidence-based practices, peer support and experiential therapy on a large campus with its own on-site school.
Accommodations and Food
Millcreek houses up to 111 residents at a time. Boys and girls are housed in separate wings of the treatment facility. Some boys may also be housed in a nearby lodge. Residents have one or two roommates and take all meals in a cafeteria, which prepares standard American fare. Residents can decorate their rooms to add personal touches from home.
The facility also has a large gymnasium and a day room for television and games.
Treatment and Staff
The average stay at Millcreek is between six and nine months. Residents attend the on-site school each day, where they have a customized education plan. Before and after school, residents perform chore assignments to help keep their rooms and common areas clean and organized.
As Millcreek treats clients with co-occurring disorders, residents spend weekday treatment hours in group therapy for their mental health diagnosis and then have substance abuse groups on the weekends. They also have individual therapy as-needed. Boys and girls generally have separate schooling and treatment groups. They interact with each other at monthly social events where staff can help lessen any conflicts that arise.
Substance abuse treatment follows the 7 Challenges curriculum, which has a harm-reduction philosophy rather than an abstinence-only approach. Residents identify their goals and explore how their substance abuse is harming them and how they can make choices more in line with their goals. Group therapy also uses CBT to teach decision-making and coping skills.
The treatment team at Millcreek includes psychiatrists, Master’s-level therapists such as LCSWs and LPCs and and SAC addiction counselors. There are also recreational therapists who work with the residents on art and music projects. Millcreek is in the process of installing a garden for the residents to tend.
Extras
Clients have family therapy at least twice a month, and family visits are coordinated by each client’s therapist. Millcreek creates a discharge and aftercare plan for each client and checks in with them 72 hours after discharge to see how they’re acclimating.
In Summary
Millcreek Behavioral Health has been providing psychiatric and substance abuse treatment to Arkansas’ adolescents for nearly 30 years. With its harm-reduction 7 Challenges curriculum and extensive dual diagnosis support, its young clients leave treatment with a greater understanding of how their addiction affects all aspects of their lives and how to best manage it.
