The Basics
As part of the Bay Cove Human Services organization, Bay Cove Treatment Center for Opiate Addictions is located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts. This outpatient treatment facility offers intensive and structured programs specifically for opiate addicts. Bay Cove administers Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) using methadone and provides specialty care for those with a dual diagnosis, pregnant women and those with HIV/AIDS. Therapy includes regular group and individual therapy, and psychoeducation classes with an emphasis on relapse prevention.
Treatment and Staff
This program is built on phased system designed to lessen in intensity as the client progresses, eventually resulting in a drug free status. Treatment begins with an assessment and stabilization process. A plan is developed with the goal of not only getting the individual off of drugs, but also getting them physically healthy as well. During the first six months the client and therapist work closely together in individual therapy and clients are required to find a supportive self help community, like AA/NA or Celebrate Recovery. They must also establish a housing situation that is healthy and conducive to their sobriety, and if needed assist family members in finding a support community, like Al-Anon, or family therapy. They also receive a daily dose of methadone and attend weekly group therapy sessions.
There are progress checks about once every three months, at which time the caseworker and client review their original treatment goals and plan. The hope is that the client starts to receive less medication to deal with their cravings until eventually they either gets a take-home dose for maintenance, to goes through a safe and monitored withdrawal to be totally drug free. Those who are on the track to be fully rid of addictive substances are guided by their caseworker on the withdrawal process. Additionally for clients who have a co-occurring disorders, there are medication management services and psychiatric care, including regular appointment with a physician for monitoring. In order to fully measure compliance and assess how the client is moving through the program there are also random drug tests performed.
The staff of Bay Cove who work in the opiate program is overseen by a program director that has over 25 years working in the field of addiction. The clinical staff is comprised of Master’s-level LCSWs, medical doctors and nurses.
Extras
There are ongoing referral services for those who participate in this program, which can include housing, work and family services.
In Summary
What is so striking about this facility is genuine desire and call to help an often marginalized population of addicts and treat them with respect and dignity. The program focuses on giving each client the time and support they need to achieve sobriety without judgment or shame.
