The Basics
Located in New Bloomfield, Pennsylvania, Perry Human Services has been serving the community with outpatient substance abuse and mental health services since 1974. This facility offers an array of services including therapy, drug education and prevention programs. Both adults and adolescents can receive treatment here as well as addicts’ family members. By teaching clients how to live a sober life through fun activities and healthy coping skills, sobriety becomes an attainable goal.
Treatment and Staff
Perry Human Services offers a range of outpatient services such as assessments, evaluations, individual and group counseling and support groups for family members. Through a mixture of 12-step philosophy and evidence-based therapies, adults and adolescents can begin to change their negative beliefs and behaviors. While detox is not available, referrals can be made to local facilities.
Prior to enrollment, clients can come to the facility for a full assessment with a drug and alcohol counselor. Those who have been arrested for a DUI can receive court-ordered evaluations.
Group and individual therapy uses a mixture of CBT and DBT supplemented with ideas from the 12 steps. Group topics include relapse prevention, coping skills and self-esteem. The frequency of both group and individual counseling is determined by the initial evaluation. The staff includes LADCs and social workers who specialize in substance abuse.
Extras
PHS offers support to family members of clients, assistance for the homeless and services for men in prison. A support group for family members meets every second Monday of the month at 7 pm. Counseling, education and intervention services are available to men incarcerated in the Perry County jail.
The Student Assistance Program aims to identify and help students who struggle with substance abuse or mental health issues. PHS prevention staff serve on teams in all Perry County school districts. Workshops and seminars are also offered to parents, organizations and businesses.
The Homeless Assistance Program is for those who are homeless, facing eviction or need help with a security deposit. The aim of this program is to get clients back on their feet through financial and/or temporary housing assistance. Clients must have lived in Perry County for at least six months to be eligible for these services.
In Summary
Perry Human Services aims to assist underprivileged communities, with a target population that includes homeless individuals, families, adolescents, pregnant women, women with children and intravenous drug users. For those in need of an intensive treatment program, this may not be the best option but the staff are more then happy to refer clients to an appropriate facility when necessary. Overall, this organization offers an array of prevention services and tools for those in need.
