The Basics
Founded in 1949, Far Rockaway Treatment Center in Far Rockaway, Queens, New York, is a division of Long Island Jewish Medical Center under the umbrella of Northwell Health. It offers outpatient alcohol and addiction treatment to adults and children over the age of 12, with a special focus on the Orthodox Jewish community.
Treatment and Staff
After an initial pre-screening phone call, qualified clients are given assessments so that counselors can develop an individualized treatment plan consisting of up to five days a week of group and individual therapy where evidence-based practices, such as CBT and psychoeducation are used. Specialized groups for co-occurring disorders, anger management, parenting skills, domestic violence and relapse prevention are available, as are gender-specific and age-specific groups and groups that cater to clients of the Orthodox Jewish community. Group sizes vary but are usually offered in the evenings and last for one-and-a-half to two hours. Although programs are not 12-step based, counselors strongly encourage clients to attend outside AA and NA meetings. Family therapy is also available as needed.
For clients with opioid/opiate dependency, medication-assisted treatment via Suboxone is used.
Clients in need of stabilization or more intensive care are given referrals to outside detox or residential treatment programs. Medication management is provided by the staff psychiatrist for clients with a dual diagnosis. All clients are subject to random urine tests throughout treatment.
Staff is a mixture of LCSWs and CASACs with bi-lingual counselors for Spanish speaking clients. Far Rockaway also has a psychiatrist on staff.
Extras
Additional services include case management, crisis intervention and drug court treatment.
Far Rockaway also offers a family program that consists of group and individual therapy, where the client, counselor and family members discuss learn about addiction and how it often becomes as a family disease.
Aftercare is offered in the form of one morning group meeting a week for an indefinite period of time. Clients also are subject to random urine tests during this phase.
