Women’s Institute for Family Health

The Basics

Despite the name, Women’s Institute for Family Health in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania is not just for women. Founded in 1999 by Laura Roache, M. Ed, this community-focused, ethnically-diverse and multilingual facility also offers an array of services to men, children and families—including The Recovery Net, its outpatient treatment program for alcohol and drug addiction.

Treatment and Staff

Upon intake, assessments are done to determine whether clients will thrive with a combination of group and individual therapy or if treatment should be confined to weekly one-on-one counseling only. Groups also meet once a week and typically contain about eight people—a mixture of men and women—and focus on the 12 steps. There are also specialty groups for anger management, parenting and domestic violence. Family therapy is also available as needed.

For clients with co-occurring disorders, medication management is available but the facility does not offer Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) for opioid withdrawal.

Staff is made up of LADCs and community volunteers. Clients with mental health needs are referred to a psychiatrist who can prescribe medication, if necessary.

Extras

Additional services include community education on a wide range of health risks and challenges, abstinence education for children and youth, the Sex After Marriage program and HIV/AIDS testing, case management and group meals, which are provided courtesy of Philadelphia’s Department of Public Health.

In Summary

In all, Women’s Institute for Family Health is an excellent resource for residents of the Greater Philadelphia area. With a strong emphasis on personal empowerment, the programs aim to help women, men, children and families better themselves and their life circumstances. Its outpatient alcohol and drug treatment program is more traditional, in that it relies heavily on peer support and 12-step philosophies and encourages clients to build a foundation in local recovery networks for continued outside support. Along with its various other social services, Women’s Institute for Family Health remains a solid choice for outpatient care.
