The Basics
The University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) was founded in 1823 and is one of the nation’s oldest medical facilities. Originally started as the Baltimore Infirmary, UMMC is located in the heart of Baltimore, Maryland. In addition to a vast range of medical services, UMMC’s Department of Psychiatry provides outpatient substance abuse services for adults. The clinical staff offers traditional treatment practices as well as holistic treatments including acupuncture and specialty classes.
Treatment and Staff
UMMC offers an individualized treatment approach for its clients. Each individual must be diagnosed through an intake assessment process. If the client is in need of detox prior to treatment, he or she will be admitted to the hospital. Individuals that were in detox for opiate addiction may be placed in a Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) plan. There is Suboxone and Methadone treatment available over the course of six months. If there are any co-occurring disorders present, clients are offered dual diagnosis support through specialty groups and medication management. Psychiatrists are on staff to support clients and supervise medication.
Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) tracks are available depending on the client’s needs. UMMC follows the OATS Treatment Philosophy, which approaches addiction as a disease and follows the 12 steps. Clients can expect group therapy, individual therapy and case management. Clients have the option to attend treatment during the day or in the evening in order to accommodate work and family responsibilities. Specialty groups are available including gender-specific groups, relapse prevention groups and parenting skills.
All therapeutic activities are facilitated by LADCs, LCSWs, LPCs, licensed acupuncturists, psychiatrists and child life specialists. Clinical staff and case managers are able to provide resources.
Extras
UMMC offers acupuncture to help clients with stress management and self care. In addition to medical services and holistic treatments, there is a play center for kids as well as parenting classes.

Clients can either be enrolled in standard outpatient or an IOP track that works with clients’ schedules and insurance coverage.
