The Basics
The University of North Dakota’s University Counseling Center offers outpatient treatment to students of the University, a 15,000-member public campus located in the city of Grand Forks. UCC has been providing an outpatient treatment program since 2005 with a mission to empower “all students to reach their fullest potential while providing challenging self-growth opportunities through a full-range of therapeutic interventions and training opportunities.”
Treatment and Staff
Most students in the outpatient program are referrals after having violated the campus alcohol and drug policy. However, some are self-referred or come through an outside referral (a healthcare or academic professional).
After an assessment, clients receive a treatment plan that includes group therapy once or twice a week and individual therapy as-needed. The duration of treatment is progress based and dependent on the needs of the client. Most clients complete their treatment plan in 12 to 14 weeks.
Therapy incorporates CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and mindfulness techniques. Clients are also encouraged to attend 12-step meetings outside of treatment.
The treatment team includes Master’s-level therapists (including LPCs), PhD-level psychologists, and LACs. The staff is also qualified to provide therapy for those struggling with co-occurring disorders and can refer clients to additional mental health facilities if their mental health condition escalates.
Groups tend to have fewer than 10 participants, and topics are tailored to those enrolled. As need arises, the UCC offers gender-specific and/or trauma-focused groups, through these specific issues are mainly addressed in individual therapy.
Extras
University Counseling Center also offers career counseling services, couples counseling, crisis counseling and financial wellness events.
In Summary
University of North Dakota’s University Counseling Center offers a standard outpatient treatment program to currently enrolled students. Its small groups and dual diagnosis-trained staff ensure that clients receive responsive, individualized care for substance use and mental health disorders during this vulnerable transition time in their lives.
