sober living south san francisco californiaThe Basics

For over 23 years, The Latino Commission (TLC) has served the California communities of San Francisco, San Mateo and Tulare counties with a variety of Latino-focused behavioral and mental health programs and services—including outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, teen pregnancy prevention and family empowerment programs. Expanding its reach beyond the California’s Bay Area and Central Valley, The Latino Commission offers a three- to six-month residential treatment program for substance abuse. Treatment is bi-cultural and communal and though there is a particular focus on the Latino community, all are welcome.

Accommodations and Food

TLC has three residences that can accommodate nine clients each, totaling 27 available beds, with residents sharing bedrooms with one to three other roommates. Houses are equipped with a full kitchen where clients take turns cooking for each other, in addition to daily chores that are assigned on a rotating basis.

Treatment and Staff

After initial intake, clients meet with staff to develop individualized treatment plans comprised mainly of group therapy, though individual sessions are available on an as-needed basis. Treatment employs evidence-based practices, such as CBT, and varies in intensity depending on the client’s needs. Groups address topics such as anger management, relapse prevention, self-esteem, life skills, financial management, addictive thinking, codependency and HIV education. While 12-step participation is not required, AA/NA meeting attendance is encouraged. Family members are also strongly encouraged to participate in the treatment process.

Staff consists of LMFTs, CADCs and RNs.

Extras

Additional services include youth development programs, such as teen pregnancy prevention, and family empowerment services such emergency crisis assistance, referral services and food pantry and clothes distribution. For clients who complete the residential program or who are attending outpatient treatment, TLC offers transitional living programs.

In Summary

In all, The Latino Commission Residential provides comprehensive, bi-cultural and community-focused substance abuse treatment. By combining evidence-based techniques with peer support, behavior modification and life skills development, TLC’s culturally sensitive approach to recovery provides a safe and familiar environment for its demographic at a very affordable price.
